I think "autism" is the wrong title for our condition.
This post makes no sense.
"Aspie" is just shorthand for what we call each other. "Aspergers" was the official term that society used.
How does an IQ cutoff of 70 assume that we are slow learners?
If you're dumber than 70 you cant be HFA or aspie. You cant be a ret*d. But you can be a little slow (70-89), or normal (90 to 110), or above (up to an including genius).
Just had to say: all squares are rectangles. Not all rectangles are squares.
A square is a specific type of rectangle, and I think Asperger's is a specific type of autism, under a much wider umbrella. I think the differentiation is still important. The term autism is still so strongly linked with classic autism that many Aspie's may even dismiss being autistic and not realize they were on the spectrum, forever wondering just what was wrong with them, if not for the more specified term. How many times has someone told you that you can't have autism because you speak fluently and went to a regular school and don't act like Rain Man? I have no problem being autistic, I'm not trying to distance myself from "those people." It's just that the term autism is still so closely linked with the more obvious forms (obvious to NTs anyway) that I think the subcatagorey Asperger's is still very helpful.
It's irrelevant who Hans Aspergers was. The city of Liverpool, England flirted with renaming streets that had been named after slave-traders. This jeopardized the street named after James Penny. But today, no one remembers James Penny, the original meaning behind the street's name has been lost with time, but everyone knows Penny Lane. Needless to say, the city didn't rename the street.

James Penny was not a person who was complicit in trying to kill people on the street that would be named after him. Hans Asperger was a person complicit in trying to kill people who had the condition that would be named after him. One of the reasons people self identified with Aspergers was that it was commonly believed that Asperger who quietly working against the Nazis to help and shield the people who had the condition that would be named after him. I thought it was relevant enough who he was that I spent time and money reading the book by Edith Scheffer about who he was.
And lets face it money would be lost in Penny Lane were renamed.
