reasons why i have been quiet all this time
of this members abuse? or "are afraid
of what could happen" ?
Here is an example right here. I've been around on this board for quite some time, but I've never posted until recently because I'm always afraid of what could happen. Even though I do not know these people, I am afraid that something I will say will alienate them even before I get to know them. And some of these people you read enough of their posts and it is almost as if these people become friends even though that person has no knowledge of your existence. What would happen if one of these people that you like decides that he or she does not like you? It would be like you lost a friend. Some of us just aren't ready to put ourselves out there.
I am sure that the number of people registered is inflated, but not by any member of the development team or anything of that nature. I'm sure a lot of parents of children with AS come to this site and register, but then never do anything here once they realize that this site is more geared toward people who have AS as opposed to NTs who deal with people with AS. It is not as if one can simply delete themselves if he or she decides not to return. Why would that person even bother? I wouldn't. I also have the bad habit of just creating a new identity if I forget my password because that is easier than asking for my password to be reset or emailed to me (unless that system is automated). I don't like dealing with people, and creating a new identity is an easy way around that.
The short answer is: we're dealing with Aspies here, lots of us are afraid of the concequences of interacting with people, and this is interacting with people.

It sounds like you are afraid of being emotionally hurt.
Am I correct in my summary?
If so, don't fret, this is a communication board, and
like a family, not everyone is always going to get along!
But altimately, the site WrongPlanet is usually the main
communication outlet and we all need each other in
quiet or more obvious ways. So think of this as a
family, and through bad and good, the good outways
the bad!
site and register, but then never do anything here once
they realize that this site is more geared toward people
who have AS as opposed to NTs who deal with people with AS.
Sound point, but that is slowly changing. Like with all
evolution, acceptance is inevitable, but can seem slow.
There are people like myself who watchdog this, and
will make our voices obvious of this neglect the NT-
supporter of ASD-spectumed folks.
So be patient!
As a quick thought, we are all here for the same reason,
communication without the usual NT-judgements. We
may not get along, but no family is perfect, and good
comes out of the bad! As evolution and patience goes
hand and hand!
Sincerely,
Ghosthunter
I've noticed that too, and figured it was for the same reasons you say. Especially when you look at the number of times a thread is read, as opposed to the number of times it's posted-to. When there's a discrepancy as great as you see there, you know there are lots of lurkers.
I know I lurked awhile before posting.
I also can say that my AS ex-#3 would NEVER have posted unless directly addressed by someone who knew he was here (I don't know if he is!). He just could never address someone unless they said something to him first, and even then, he could only answer 1/2 the time.
And Pikachu, Hey there! I love pokemon and the pokemon metagame! I have all the games and lots of other stuff. Certified pokemaniac, I am.
No.
No.
No but the content from the wiki has been copied (with permission) from Wikipedia. You can find out more information here.
EDIT: When I answered this, I hadn't read the stuff about other people mentioning the Jypsy site. I think it is appropriate to address this issue. No, we did not copy her content, or even host it. We merely placed an IFRAME link to the internet archive's archive of the page. This was entirely within the bounds of the law. The internet is built upon linking to other content. And we made it clear that this was not our content. However, we removed the link after we were requested to do so by the creator of the content.
We created one "fake" user for testing purposes. The username "testuser" makes it obvious that it is a test user. To get an accurate member count, you can subtract 1 from the number of registered users. These are the only users that WrongPlanet.net created. However, individual users (LGB, who was banned and then came back under a different name, for example) have created more than one identity and I don't really know how many people did this but I can guess that there aren't more than 20 (at the most) duplicate users (although other people could be creating duplicate users). Many of the users who register, however, do not post because they merely like to read the forums. Also, some people register and then leave. There is no way to accurately count active members. Although our numbers are definitely less inflated than the other Asperger's sites I know of because we require users to validate via email (sites like AFF don't do this and thus will have highly (hundreds of) inflated numbers compared to WrongPlanet.net).
I hope this answers your questions. Also, welcome to WrongPlanet.net
Thank you alex, i have been aware of conflicts for a while and wanted to find out what was true and what wasn't, at least you have cleared that up, i have signed up to other aspie forums (2 to my count) and also have been using aspie chat rooms for a while longer but it was when i came here when i heard these rumours,
Also, thanks for not banning me for this thread
I only look for the truth behind rumours as i hate them being spread
Certified Pokemaniac! Wow!
I'm an uncerified pokemaniac, i have the first 3 game boy games, a load of trading cards (can't remember how many) a HUGE Pikachu poster, and the first few episodes of the tv series and two of the movies (the first movie, and Pokemon 2000) on videotape (other later tv episodes i had to record from tv) i don't watch much of the tv series at the moment becauser the british broadcasters don't broadcast it at suitable times for me, especially BSkyB (Sky UK) who seem to prove useless for programme choice
I have other interests too
Computers, mobile phones (cellphones), and radio and tv transmitter masts

I have loads of toys and several of each console made by Nintendo, including the pokemon N64. I always liked video games, but there are so many things about pokemon that appeal to me on so many different levels. The whole metagame is so complex. I don't even try to explain it to peope
I don't like the cartoon (to repetitive) but I love the games and the artwork, the story and the premise and the game mechanics. And I have way too many stuffed pikachus (and other pokes).
Feel free to pm me or email me any time. I'd be glad to share stuff with you! I tend to collect too many of everything, and my very tolerant husband reminds me
I'm a java web services programmer. I want to do limited device programming, but don't get much chance where I work.

WrongPlanet was featured on the front page of Slashdot, a "geek news" site that's read by *millions* of people every day. Given the association between Asperger Syndrome and geeks, it would be surprising if a few hundred Slashdotters didn't join up in the days that followed. Many of them will have moved on to the next shiny distraction or have gone back to reading Slashdot and forgotton about WP altogether. It probably wouldn't hurt if Alex had a script that removed lurkers who haven't visited in the previous six months, but as long as the dormant members aren't slowing down the SQL queries there's not much need for it.
"Several orders of magnitude" is a lot of inflation. The membership count as I write this stands at 1552. If you decrease that by *two* orders of magnitude then that would mean there was only 15 people here....
When I first discovered AS I joined several other forums (Yahoo, Delphi, AFF) but most of them either lack content (posts few and far between) or have a general theme and/or tone to the posts that I just don't find enjoyable. WrongPlanet is consistently active and is mostly full of friendly people, and it's this sense of "family" that keeps me coming back whenever I have time.

IMHO, I think the number of users is at most inflated by 5% (which would be about 70 users).
Jetson does have a good point about the Slashdot article increasing the user count however. I wonder how many of them actually stayed when all was said and done.

Me too. And since I can no longer remember my password and member names on Delphi and Aspergia, I don't post there, though I'm sure I am still on their member count!
This is the only Aspergian forum I have been on. And I shall soon reach 1000 posts.
