well the authoritian government doesn't help things there either....lol IT WAS ILLEGAL TO BUY, OWN AND CHEW GUM FOR YEARS!
Over the years the authoritarianism has toned down significantly. But so long as the grand old man of Singapore remains alive and kicking, he will never stop using paranoia to cement his power. It is a common misconception to think that it is illegal to own or chew gum in Singapore. You can bring and consume chewing gum in Singapore but you cannot sell it. Since gum cannot be sold, it essentially means that almost no one chews it; unless you want to make a special trip to a neighboring country just to buy chewing gum. Some people think that there is resistance to this policy but most Singaporeans actually quietly support it. We like things neat and clean and not having to walk on sidewalks made disgusting and sticky by chewing gum is a definite social good.
It is disturbing though to read how Singapore's leaders believe that there is a widespread conspiracy in the Western media to do Singapore in because of our success. Even if it were true, it is definitely bad public relations to say it out loud. And that is where the rub really hurts. Despite the massive effort which Singaporeans have made to pull ourselves up, it gets on our nerves that other people believe that we are serfs in a Czarist state.
