I have a generally good command of the English language, although my brain is not synchronized with my mouth. If I am speaking to someone, my brain will accelerate rapidly until it is thinking about 4 or 5 words ahead of what I am speaking, and then all of a sudden, it snaps. Once that happens, I actually lose the ability to speak for about 5 seconds, at which point I will say "I just forgot what I was going to say", followed by 5-10 more seconds before my brain can formulate any new ideas. The original idea I was speaking of is lost in my mind, and can only be recovered if someone else brings it up.

Although it is a delight to have control of a wide vocabulary and a good understanding of the basic rules of language the point of writing or speaking to people is to convey something clearly and quickly and in general simple words with obvious meanings make the most appropriate tools. Using complicated and unfamiliar expressions gets in the way of clear and direct communication. And people are understandably offended by language that is used merely to confuse or demonstrate the superiority of the speaker.

I wasn't refering to the length of words when writing about "big words". I know that a word doesn't need to be long to be considered "big", such one which isn't generally used by average people. Well, maybe "prudish" isn't part of basic vocabulary but I didn't expect that having used such a word at presence of girls of 16 several years ago, I'd hear: "please, use such words so as we could understand you". Anyway, even if this word isn't used very often, in a normal everyday conversations, it doesn't belong to the category of words like transubstantiation or metampsychosis which can be suspected of being completely unknown for most people. In many cases I have no idea that some words's meaning can remain a secret for majority of people. I tend to assume automatically that each one is equally well read as myself... well, I burn my fingers then and I draw a conclusion that it isn't necessarily true.

I run into that problem as well. In addition, I cannot fathom why they do not understand me! I often am accused of being condescending and sarcastic when I am being sincere. I get sick of constantly going into tons of detail, just so people can comprehend me. This is why I would make a terrible teacher. I do not have the patience to explain things, esp when I cannot identify with people do not understand the idea at hand in the first place!

What is your usage of inarticulate?

To me, articulate is about clarity and specificity of communication.

Same here. Sometimes it is so informal it is unintelligible. Such as leetspeak. Double negatives can be confusing. If you do not commit those sins though then it is actually more articulate to be informal because it is more efficient. Many people do commit those sins however.

I think I am quite good with writing. But with speaking, not really. I stumble over words, have difficulty finding the right ones, and I don't always put them together in the proper way. I've become better at it recently, especially when I feel relaxed and take my time to search for wording which I feel to be more appropriate. But anxiety will make my speech ruptured and odd all over again, and I don't think I will ever be a good speaker. Not a good public speaker at any rate.

I have my teacher practice since this month - I teach English. Once I was writing new words on the blackboard and there was a word "louse" among them. I asked my students whether they knew said word and one boy explained it, giving the name of this insect in our native language. His friend heard it and asked quite seriously: "what is it a louse"? 8O Well, even this boy wasn't as "wise" as one of his classmates today - maybe you won't believe me but it was 10 minutes before the end of the lesson when he realized the class was writing a kind of test and he should be doing it together with the rest 8O 8O 8O

I don't like being a teacher; I'm not patient enough, anyway I can't judge whether my pupils understood what I explained to them.

I am particularly apt with the english language for a very good reason.
I see letters the same way I see numbers; they are merely patterns put together a certain way to a desired end. It is very much like algebra to me. In this way, I've been able to excel in anything mathematical, scientific, or language arts. This, I've been told, is unusual. However, I enjoy it greatly...anything to shock people and learn at the same time.

Incredibly so. When I get on a roll, though, I find myself babbling at such a tremendous speed that people have trouble keeping up with what I'm saying. I do tend to use complete sentences more often when I'm speaking in this way, though. I have a very rich vocabulary, and I am highly skilled at using it to create imagery.

I have always been a talented writer as I tend to write from lots of perspectives and unconsiously engage all senses and express what is within and what can be viewed remotely in case the reader doesnt relate to my characters or stories.
I find as of late though my verbal/written skills are in decline .

Unfortunately, I am a teacher and I don't feel good about it. I don't think I am doing the job well enough and I don't think it is the right thing for me.

I have a huge vocabulary, and I can say clearly very complex words (you know, the big, multisyllabic words based on Latin and Greek) most people have extreme dificulty in saying. My way of speaking can be very formal at times.

I am a linguisitic geniuss. Moi, je parlez le frenchie trez bunn. And Inglish too.

But seriously...
I am somewhat mixed. I speak and write rather formally, and I have a huge vocabulary. On the other hand, my punctuation and spelling can be erratic, which is perhaps odd for a person who reads so voraciously as I do.
