I couldn't kill off my own personality... no amount of pain curing is worth that...

If it took away certain things that bothered me and made me more socially inept, yes. But not if it took away my obsessions with things - I enjoy them too much, and I like my analytical view of society. I'm not really sure whether thats an AS trait, though.

that's kinda unfair. Kids have to learn about responsibility and after the homework or chores are done, they can go out and play. If Calvin there didn't take his meds, he wouldn't do his homework and be constantly hounded by distractions and eventually fail in life. Apparently the meds are working with Calvin and if it means sacrificing poor Hobbes, so be it.

The cartoon scared me. Your rejoinder almost sent me into a screaming fit.

My God.

Yeah I remember the first time I saw that cartoon and it disturbed me too. I used to be big into Calvin and Hobbes, I still have some of the books.

I would like a cure for the associated problems like anxiety, but not for my ability to memorize facts or my broad general knowledge. I couldn't do my job without those traits. I wouldn't give up my love and compassion for animals for anything. I think my love of cats has helped me find lasting friendships.

The only thing I'd want cured is the anxiety I have, especially when it comes to interviews for jobs. Other than that, I don't want to lose my personality, or my attention to detail which is good for working.

I wouldn't take any pill that would cure my autism, autism has been apart of my life since I came into this world, and I plan to leave this world with it.

No. Unless you only had to take the pill once and your all set. Otherwise I just wish there was a way to feel comfortable with the way I am.. I need a good environment with good people, if at all possible.

No, I wouldn't take that pill; I think that if my Asperger's were 'cured', I wouldn't be the same person anymore. I wouldn't be as creative or as imaginative or even as persevering in my work. I know that there are down sides to Asperger's, but there are down sides to being normal as well. I would love to be able to socialize and understand some social cues like everyone else (because it can be frustrating! lol), but I don't think I could just cut Asperger's out of my life for that. It's like throwing away a perfectly good piece of fruit because of a small bruise on it.

The topic seems to have mutated into 'What would you change about yourself given the chance'.
Not something limited to ASD, everyone but Buddha wants to be someone else.
The real question in my mind is, if Asperger's is not actually a disorder but a different form of consciousness, a pill to cure it is identical to a definition of the 'right' way to think.
Our philosophies are nowhere near advanced enough to make that determination.
I wouldn't take it simply because it would be like dying. Might as well take a cyanide pill. The effect is the same.
Heh, that comment seems to relate to the cartoon. Dying inside seems almost worse than dying physically.

Dys, that is what it felt like when they "treated" me for my alleged schizophrenia. It felt like dying.

Well, as I said in another topic, I can't say what being autistic/aspie is like to me, because I can't separate it from the rest of me. So what exactly would the pill do? Cure autism? Well, that means making me a different me, so hell no.

That doesn't mean I don't want to get rid of some of my autistic traits. I would love to take a pill that'd reduce my sensory overload, actually. (in fact, when my old shrink prescribed me risperdal, she hoped that's what it'd do, and it worked for a short while but not anymore) I'm not opposed to meds that reduce certain autistic symptoms, provided they are taken with the autistic's informed consent. However, I would be opposed to a cure ofr autism as a whole.

Well, you would be a totally different you. This is not just if you believe autism is a pervasive condition (which you apparently do not believe). Even people who have had disabilities like blindness for most or all of their lives, need to adjust all over again if they regain their vision. I'm blind, and ain't sure whether I would want to be fully sighted (I've been visually impaired as a child,s o yes I would love to have that vision back), and blindness isn't even about one's inner personality.
