I don't understand it either. Shopping must be some sort of highly socialized activity. Nevertheless, I do not enjoy it. People everywhere, long line ups, people getting in your way in aisles, stopping for absolutely no reason, other people blocking your path moving too slowly, or people behind you in a line that invade your personal space--I've had to put my basket behind me in order to keep them away. At least shopping for stuff you like with friends isn't so bad, but I don't consider it to be a hobby. Especially going shopping with my mom because she buys or looks at stuff I'm not interested in, or takes forever in getting what she wants. I only shop for groceries and stuff that I need--I go there to get what I want and leave with nothing more than that.

I agree with you.

Grocery isn't that bad....

Now clothes shopping is really torture. Clerks rushing to help you, except they're clueless. The smell of the formaldehyde wipes me out. I get dizzy, and can't concentrate at all. Soon, flight instinct kicks in...

ipod idea is a great one, just don't be choosing a song when crossing the road or anything like that. someone got hit by a car recently doing that.

I forgot to mention another one, but there may be a few solicitors or proselytizers hanging around when you're at the mall sometimes. The glare usually works on them.

Siuan, hats off to you for even attempting what you did. Not even on my best day could I ever envision not only going shopping alone with my 2 ASD kids, but to a dept. store AND Wal-mart. Wow.

Today I had to exchange something at a department store, then pick up a couple of things from WalMart. Sounds simple, but it never is. In order to exchange something, I had to find something else. This meant fitting room buzzer hell, a bunch of people asking me if they could help me when I clearly wanted to be left alone, and noise overstimulation. I had my children with me, four and two, both of whom are autistic. At the particular store I was in, there is a saleslady who I cannot stand who walks in and out of the fitting room tripping the buzzer over and over and over. She always does this. Today I snapped and went out there and told her that both of my children are autistic and she is torturing them, and if she didn't stop I was going to the manager and the corporate management to let them know how children with disabilities were being treated in their store. She stopped. I was already pretty rattled though, and my kids were bouncing nuts, covering their ears and stimming like mad.

Then WalMart. Screaming children, lights too loud, squeaky wheels. My daughter had lost all focus and kept walking into things and misbehaving. My son whined incessantly. I actually felt exhausted when I got home, everything hurt and everything was too loud and bright. The kids were nutty the entire evening, never calmed down after that.

Shopping sucks. I feel like I need a spa day, a massage and a four hour nap afterward. People ENJOY shopping!! !? Are they mad!?

ouch, sorry to hear you had a rough day, indeed my parents love shopping and as a kid I would always have to go with them, today I only go shopping when absolutly nesissary and buy eveything in bulk whenever possible to prolong the time I can go without shopping. When I do go out I hit every place at once, know what i need and where to get it and am super quick, in and out, obviously this is impossible when you have others such as your children with you, I feel for you. I wish more shopping could occure online

I wear cotton wool in my ears. If people ask, I've got an earache.

You have every right in the world to protect your senses and steer clear of things that rattle your nerves. If that means plugging your ears, moving away from screaming children/babies - getting sanity back - do it. Other people have problems with this, I know. But you can simply explain that this is how you are and hope they'll get it.

I know what you mean. I've been in a slump, about going out. So yesterday I went out, there was a screaming kid down one of those halls that echo. So I plugged my ears, then my mom acted as if we had to get out of there, like I was behaving like a bratty kid cause I'm plugging my ears. I explained to her, that I have a right to behave in a way that is comfortable for me, without having it seen as an emergency, cause I'm not being NT. She said she wasn't embarrassed, but I don't really see any other motive for her acting as if we should have to rush down the stairs like there's a fire in the building, or something.

Then at The Olive Garden, I always say to someone I do not want to be sat next to, or have small children sat next to me. Apperantly this concept is like explaining rocket science to a monkey. Like there was a baby crying about 5 feet away. So I wanted to say, when they were crying to the person who sat me there "Can you hear that, can you? That's what I meant by I don't want to sit near any small children, don't lie to me." The problem is effectually, trying to confront them with that information, makes them react like they're helpless.

I was talking about this on a hyperacusis board, then happened along another post about curing Autism. What do you think, do you think I should leave the forum? I think it's rather ignorant of them to suggest that's an appropriate topic. It's like discussing politics.

Exactly, after all they don't ever have to explain to me, why they are such bad parents as to not know how to use a pacifier on their child.

Yep. My favorite is when I finally get a night out with my husband (rare) and we go to dinner and we're inevitably seated next to a family of ten with four screaming toddlers.
:x at The Olive Garden.

I don't go to restaurants if I can help it. Last time I went, I got severe indigestion and nausea afterwards because the whole meal was spent in a sea of noise.

I've decided that the next time I go to Victoria's Secret, I'm going to the one where the mall entrance is just across from the store entrance. The reason is that I can avoid those pushy salespeople at the kiosks, the last time, one tried to put this sea salt lotion crap on my hand as I was leaving the store.

I'm bringing my ipod when it's time to get a baby shower gift for my SIL so I can use it to drown out the noise of screaming kids who nearly run into you with those Heeleys. I don't mind babies crying, it's just the unruly kids whose parents don't teach proper behavior that are annoying.

I depends on the time of day and the day of the week. I love going down to the shop on a Monday morning but I refuse to go near a shop on a Saturday unless I really have to I find q's really annoying and especially when you are walking in a department store and people infront of you starts walking really slowly I really want to shout at them when they do that. Monday morning is usually very quiet not many people around you can just go in and out the shops with no problem what so ever.

It might have been funny, after they did that you screamed "WAIT, I'M ALLERGIC TO THAT!" and faked having Anphalactic shock.

There was a stall advertising "massage cushions" that you can place on your armchair. One stupid saleswoman grabbed me and placed me on a chair. I hate vibrations. I felt this thing move around on my back and I jumped up almost immediately, shouting at her that I hated the thing and walked off.
