Kitsy and BlueMax, I was pretty clear that I was directing my comments at people who agree with BlueMax. That was the subject, of course that would be what I was discussing. Again, the bolded quote of mine doesn't contain any insult. Blue Max, you said you didn't want to be lumped in with someone who "'seems' handicapped", that is what I quoted and what I feel TheZach was addressing. So, I don't know why you would "wonder" what's wrong with your comments.
Quote:
Can it be agreed that someone with AS is NOT immediately recognized as having any "conditions" until a few failed attempts at certain communication?
Can it be agreed that it can be frustrating to gain understanding for AS when people expect some type of "autistic" display (as seen in the young fellow in the video) and dismiss your claims because you don't have those type of conditions?
You see where I'm trying to go with this???
This is why I made reference to "seeing videos, photos, and read posts" of people here. I don't see a difference between us and him. AS is in the DSM-IV because it's seen as a disability, a disorder. The man in the video had a flat tone and nervous laugh. Those can definitely be autistic traits, if we're solely going by the video. So, it doesn't really make sense to elevate oneself and say, "I'm not like
that!"
If you were really trying to say that you're frustrated by others not realizing you're handicapped, I can understand that point. The truth is, that's the problem with autism awareness. There is not enough realistic information out there. How many Hollywood movies are out there that are overtly about autism and Asperger's? Three? (Rain Man, Snow Cake and Mozart and the Whale) and two of those are obscure. People generalize about all sorts of stuff they don't understand. And that's their problem of ignorance.
But please understand that your original statement and the ones that people on this thread were defending is quite different from the above quote.
Uncle Beer, I'm sorry if you're seeing my post as inflammatory too. I mean to defend the video, it is heart-warming.
