Fortunately, professors and other highly educated people tend to think I'm smart after talking to me. People who are not so well educated generally don't, though. With people who are self-educated, it's not as predictable. I really wonder why my perceived intelligence is apparantly correlated with the education level of the observer.
Actually, peoples opinion of me is much the same. In MY case, it is because I talk more with people that talk about something I know, have feelings about, or that I think is interesting. And THEY tend to feel I am smart because I REALLY know it and/or have good/interesting ideas about it and/or ask good questions. Besides, SMART people KNOW smart people don't know everything, etc... People that aren't so smart might figure you are stupid if you misspeak or can't answer a question THEY see as easy. Besides, if they don't know any things I feel are interesting and/or aren't interested in what I know, I may not even reveal I can even talk!
