Here's a suggestion: Go to Wikipedia, and click the "Random article" link until you bump into something you can't help but read it. Hopefully there'll be links in there to more interesting subjects that you can't resist from reading either (a web brower supporting tabbed browsing is really great for this).

The goal is to end up with a dozen open tabs in the browser with articles on things you found to be interesting. When that happens, take a "step back" and see what topics you've got there. This should be a good pointer for you...

I'm not sure I want to feel obliged to volunteer during my free time, so I will put volunteering out of the question for now.

What else can I do to pass time (preferably something that I can do inside my house)?

Maybe start learning some language. If you're ambitious, try dealing with Polish  - it occupies first places of the list of the most difficult languages in the world  You may also try taking part in contests - I used to do this for 2 years and it was a big obsession of mine  Now I'm planning to start doing this again.

Do you know of any website where I can go to learn a language?

Tell us what language you want to learn, and we can help you find something. Do you want a European language, or an Asian language, or something else? Do you want something spoken by many people worldwide, or something obscure? Do you want something similar to English or completely different? Would you prefer something with a Roman alphabet, or another alphabet, or no alphabet at all (like Chinese)? Do you want something that will be easy to learn, or a challenge?

Do you know any other languages already?

I used to just go to the library and see what they had for cassette courses. Now, with the internet available, I can start out easily at home and get the feel for a language.

I want to learn an Indo-European language ;); but more specifically, a romance language.

Rosetta Stone is best for learning a foreign language. They show you pictures and speak what it says in the foreign language. Their products are expensive ($209) but they have a free online demo that has alot of words and phrases for over 20 languages. If you really like it, you can probably buy it cheaper on eBay.
