I got my wacom graphire 4x5 tablet in Tuesday and last night I hooked it up and played my computer version of mahjongg...
this is going to be great way to familiarize myself with the pen and tablet.

I tend to play very rapidly and so while i'm scanning for matches my hand is moving the pen around clicking tiles.
I think the tablet is going to get a fair amount of game time (this is my only game) besides the schoolwork i'll be doing with it.

I've been trying to download Goban, the game for macs, but it's not working for me. Maybe it's not being supported anymore and the site isn't downloading the game anymore?

Whitedragon... thanks for that link. I just checked it out and I may try it.

Not now, I'm fixing to log off and go to bed. What do you mean by the 19K and 30K? I'm not familiar with online gaming either, but thanks for the invite.

Go Ranks are from 30k (Complete Beginner) to 1k (Strong Beginner) then 1 Dan to 10 Dan.

Then it gets confusing.

Oh, you were talking about GO. I thought you meant the MahJongg game.
I don't play GO yet.
I haven't the slightest idea how.
But when I have time I plan on checking it out.

I did find a GO Association of some sort online and they have links and information.
I just haven't had the time to read it yet.. only found it this evening.

This is a ten year old thread by the way.

But having said that...

Mah Jongg was big in my grandparents day back in the Twenties and Thirties. Mom told me that its the same thing as rummy, or as gin rummy, one of the two, except that its played with tiles instead of with playing cards. Same darn thing.

Forgotten how to play gin rummy, and have never tried mah jongg.

HAVE played Go, though. Very different game. Go is awesome.

I agree with you about the game of Go. I play chess as well and I'm not an expert by any stretch with either game.

For many years I've said the following:

What chess is to our solar system, Go is to our galaxy.

Exactly. Chess is a battle. Go is the whole war.

What is Go? I love Mah Jongg. I was in a chess club a very, very long time ago. I’ll risk the wrath of true chess players, but I found the game to be too regimented. Every move has been done and bears the name of the genius who first used it. And each of those moves seems to demand that it be followed by a specific (named after someone) move. I know it’s much more than that and I have met some brilliant players, but I am stuck with that youthful perception.

I think you would enjoy the game of Go, Anne.

Yes. Go (take the glide off of the end of the "o" sound in the English word "go", to say it right) was invented in ancient China, spread to Korea, and then to Japan. In Japan its been a major national obsession for centuries.

The basic equipment of the game is very simple. A board and identical pieces (called "stones") of two different colors. But the game goes to complex heights equal to, if not beyond, chess. The stones are placed at intersections of the grid on the board (not on the squares), and remain stationary. The players try to create formations of stones to seize territory, and to strangle the other player's formations.

Go is also great because it's designed to allow for handicapping which gives beginners more strength to learn until players can be equally matched.
