Diagnosed in May 2007 and I look at it as a true blessing - I've never been so comfortable in my own skin, and I'm 40 later this year ! !

I think I may have asperger's and that is why i am here, to see if it is worth going to the psych on campus and getting her opinion or having other testing done.

I have been researching different symptoms of my own for about 2 years now. I started with the obvious one, the depression and came across CBT. That works wonders. I can actually say I rarely have bad days any more.

I have been playing around with social anxiety disorder dx but it doesn't explain a lot of my personality issues. I was reading an article about CBT a week ago and came across Aspergers. I just have to cross reference things to see what they are and I found that Aspergers fills in that gap. Now I am stopping here before I write a book.

I was diagnosed during middle school, back in the mid-90s when AS was a pretty new and uncommon diagnosis. So I don't think anybody can accuse me of being "trendy".

I was diagnosed in August 2006 by a Psychologist. I was in denial and mad at the same time at first but in time came to accept it. Sometimes I'm glad I know and sometimes I wish I didn't. It's probably better I know though.

Diagnosed in 2000 by none other than Dr Tony Attwood himself.

I'm very skeptical of people who claim to have Asperger's but have not gotten an actual and correct diagnosis. It seems to be the thing on that outrageous "emo" fad.

I'm pretty damned skeptical of those with the "pedigree", since it is a fad thing.
There are a lot of different reasons why some of us don't, a lot of them.
Emo, wtf is that? Some fad? Speak English. I can send you to a shrink that will, guaranteed, diagnose you as not having it, want his address?
I should have had my leather leash from my childhood bronzed, I think they did my baby shoes instead.
Can you tell this kind of attitude tends to piss me off?

It isn't a simple question ED, as long as we have these I'm holier then you are because I have a paper for proof of being an Aspie.

I don't have a holier than thou attitude, I'm just a skeptic because I know that a lot of people are diagnosing themselves with this, using it as an excuse to act like an ass, and in reality don't have it.

The hate against self diagnosers here is nasty.

I see that. I wasn't looking to start a fight with this topic, it really was meant to be a very simple question.

While I am diagnosed AS, it was really a self-diagnosis that was confirmed by the Psychiatric crew at my local VA hospital. When I found out about AS, it was instantly obvious to me that I had it. So I am sorta both self-diagnosed and formally diagnosed.

I was formally diagnosed with ADHD and my psych mentioned aspie traits or something (i wasn't paying attention so i don't remember much about it hahah). i started reading more about Asperger's and i'm very sure that i have it. it just seemed to fit me and, as said before, i actually feel comfortable in my skin for the first time. i felt like i was different my whole life and now it seems as though i've got an explanation why. this doesn't mean i'll use it as an excuse to act like an ass or something but it definitely helps me understand why i do the things i do.

Doctors say I have it, but I say I don't.

I wish there were options for 'I think I have it, and am pursuing diagnosis.'
To say 'I think I have it but I'm not diagnosed' doesn't sit well with me. While I pretty much identify with everyone here, and probably have some sort of diagnosable issue, I don't want to run around insisting I have it before I can back it up.

edit: In other words, I've been up and down and all around in terms of IEPs and false diagnoses, so I'm not trying to say 'oh, i have a hard time with peoplez' because if it were that simple, i would say it's the result of my poor hearing. but testing showed that i was socially functioning well below the levels of children of comparable age and hearing loss.

I'm diagnosed with it but I don't think I truly have it. Not aspie enough lol. But it's just a label. i don't think it matters anymore what label I have just as long I am on the spectrum. I wonder how many others here are diagnosed with AS but don't truly have it and they have another autism condition instead.

I went to a psychologist just long enough for her to tell me (informally) that I have it, but I stopped seeing her immediately after. I just wanted closure and it was obvious that she had absolutely 0 interest in her clients and money was #1. Unfortunately, she was the onlly A.S. specialist in my area.

i agree, I think that alot of people have symptomes in different levels of severity. i find it funny that they call it the "autism spectrum" and then have different diagnosises that are in it. it should just be a spectrum that encompasses certain symptomes in varying levels of severity.

...and thusly they labeled them, so as to indicate where on the spectrum a person fell.
