Here are two possible explainations....
1)They are bored with their own lives
2)They want some info to go gossip about to others because they have no original thoughts of their own to talk about
3)They want to act like they care so they can take that information and use it against you in the future
4)They are actually interested in you as a person and want to know more about you
My problem is I usually can't tell the difference in someones motives and "assume" they are the same as mine..ie..some people are interesting and I like information might help me understand them better
My guess is the top three, in my case. That and some underlying pathology that really needs to be looked at, because what they're doing is plain freaky and sick.

Gossip is the thing I hate most about people. I couldn't stand it, more often than not it's not even true. It was just crap that someone made up about someone else to make themselves feel better.
Oh wow. That I can so relate to!
That's why I don't like group discussions... If I can I like to pick out a single person and talk with them. Usually that is a quiet person who seems to be a little bit "different" from the group. I don't like loud mouth blabbers... Honestly does anyone? Honestly? Seriously? I mean NTs? I ponder and try to imagine. I bet they are in denial or afraid... Perhaps they go along with because they are afraid of being bullied or gossiped about...by loud moter mouth...
Usually I just listen in...if I am really curious. Sometimes I butt in...and get ignored...
I really like this quote to fire off at insensitive people:
You don't mind if I steal it right?
Here's just a random what if:
What if both NT's and us have the same emotions, etc, but they for whatever reasons are better at acting and hiding what they are really thinking and feeling? For us, we cannot express emotions the same exact way, but at the same time we are freed in a way to be able to think logically.
We can think it through and if we practice this ability we can make sound decisions better than than the NT who "Follows their heart" without giving time to just stop and think of the outcome. That's one thing I notice with myself if I don't let pressure get to me to make an instant response. (Instant responses cause me to stutter...which isn't very productive.)
For me I don't like being dishonest. I try to be as honest as I can, knowing nobody is 100% honest. Not even me. It's not possible. For me to fake and look like I am interested in someone blab about their BF/GF is just boring... I'm not going to laugh along and crowd around them...
Maybe people, NT's need to be more honest with themselves... Do they really enjoy the gossip, or do they feel a tinge of anxiety wondering if they are going to be the next victim, thus putting on an act to "suck up"?
