Hmm, this thread seems to validate my objection to the AQ question about having "difficulty" in remembering phone numbers; the consensus seems to be that Aspies have no wish to remember them, so the question of difficulty doesn't arise!

Every person save cave-dweller has a cell phone nowadays, and I have one too. I keep it off at all times to save the battery. This way it lasts for the whole year without recharging. :D
(No offense intended to cave-dwellers!)

Slight exaggeration there dude :D ! I know it seems everyone has one; do they realise how strange they look walking around with their hands on their ears?

Why isn't this compulsion to hold pointless conversations with distant people refered to as a disorder? Hell, it's actually dangerous! Can't imagine how such strange behaviour is more "acceptable" than stimming. :P

I laughed and stimmed so hard after reading this that I over-exerted my hands and now I can barely type. :D Of course it is a mental illness! Driving While Talking on the Phone has very similar effects as Driving While Intoxicated, i.e. lenghtened reaction time, inability to keep constant direction and speed, propensity to unexpected random maneuvers/manoeuvres, etc. In most countries DWTotP is outlawed as DWI is, and rightly so. However, I conjecture that talking on a cellphone is an acquired illness, not a genetic neurological disorder. It is, tragically, a highly contagious one.

I don't like talking on the phone either. There is a chance I may be getting a cellphone soon. It was "sooner or later" in the last few months, but that has been put off.

I actually feel that a cellphone is less intimating than a "regular phone," although I can't know for sure without actually having one.

I avoid the phone like it's a disgusting gym sock! I hate the phone! I actually hate speaking to most people out loud. I sound ret*d.

I don't really detest the phone, but I think it is inconvient because it's very likely that someone will ring when you are busy. Ever since I started using email, I perfered that to the phone. Email is a lot less intrusive and urgent.

I have a cell phone. Only my husband and our adult daughter call me if they can't reach me on our regular home phone. Sometimes my teenagers call to find out what happened to me if I take too long at the grocery store.
I have no need to remember phone numbers. I have them all programmed into the phone!

Oh, how I detest the telephone.

If it weren't for my difficulties putting my thoughts into words on the spot, combined with my auditory processing disorder that pretty much renders half of what's said over the phone as utter gibberish, perhaps I'd have a different opinion...

I have a cell phone-- and use it more often for text messaging than I do for actual phone calls! Although I do have it set to a ringtone that's not annoying-- the Super Mario Bros. theme song. :)

All in all, I dislike phones.

The ringing bugs me as an annoying interruption and inconvenience.
There's a stupid delay on our phone and I always have to say "hello" twice.

I wish people would just go away when they try to make small talk on the phone. I know it's a pretty stupid thing to think but I feel like they don't care if they've interrupted or annoyed you.

I HATE wrong numbers, I get them all the time.

I sometimes like talking on the phone to friends but it hurts my ear after a while and I can just sit in a comfortable position.

Some of my phone calls have lasted 3 hours +, half the time I just wanted to go away but felt rude.

I love my mobile phone but hate being bugged with it when the call isn't important. It's useful for texting people when you want to meet them and stuff, and play games and taking pictures.

I had mine on Zelda, but in the end I started to dislike hearing the tune when it rang because I hate dthe fact people were annoying me.

co-incodently, the phone rang while I was typing this post, and without thinking I let out a swear word, sighed and went to answer it.

I guess if someone interrupts me with a call, I'm probably montotone ish when I answer. I'm not that good at putting on acts at times.

I dislike talking on the phone, and try to arrange with my friends that we call each other only to make appointments to meet for dinner, a movie, whatever, but the point of the call is just to setup the meeting, plus a few seconds of 'how are you doing' period. But most folks talk and talk and talk it drives me crazy. Cellphones are the WORST! Some peole can't seem to buy a head of lettuce without getting on their cellphone and calling home in the middle of the produce section of a busy market.

I'm the strange one though, not them.

Some of my friends actually make me call them. They know that I'm extremely uncomfortable about talking on the phone, and that is exactly why they do it. They aren't mean, they are just trying to help me become more comfortable on the phone.

As much as we might hate the idea of talking on the phone, doing it without sounding like an idiot is an important skill to have.

I've always wondered how you get different ringtones like that! i just want to know so that when i do get a cellphone, i can get that instead of the annoying "Fur Elise" tune on the home phone. Classical music always makes me sick, especially when the only instrument is an annoying phone tone!

Soemtimes my friend will call me when i am in the middle of a video game. It's quite annoying, but i always put the game up (temporarily :) ) and talk to her. i don't want to offend her, especially since she's one of the few friends i have.

Well, usually, the service provider will have a library of ringtone files that you can download to your phone, either at a certain cost each or at a flat rate per month. Some phones also include functionality to compose your own ringtones; mine doesn't, but I've seen a number of phones that do offer that feature.

Most phones now have at least a polyphonic MIDI synthesizer, if not an MP3 player, which means that the rings sound a lot better than the tinny beep-beep-beep of older phones.

I've been mistaking mobile phone users for schitzophrenics, and vice versa, ever since the advent of the small cell phone.

I have always hated using the phone and its just got worse as the years go on. At home I will not answer the phone- if I'm home alone I just sit there cringing and see who was calling after its stopped ringing (if its only my mum I'll ring her straight back, otherwise I leave it).

I think mobile phones are great though- if I don't know the number I don't have to answer it and cos I can see who is calling I can prepare myself before I answer (but since my mum and dunc are the only people who normally ring me its not usually a problem).
