Internal echolalia (and especially palilalia) is present for a large fraction of the time for twoshots.

Don't know if this makes sense to anyone else.

that is EXACTLY what i do.

So do I. There was a thread about it here in which pakled used the wonderful term "staircase wit" for it.

Constantly! It can drive me nuts sometimes! Music especially, and movie dialogues. I don't non-verbalize it though. I break into song at random, quote movie lines when they pop into my head, etc. They are often the response to a question or something in a conversation. My father does this too and so do nearly all 5 of my siblings. My husband does it, his father does it, and our daughter does this too. It is most certainly related to Aspergers.

I also practice conversations ahead of time, rehearse what I will say, and go over conversations that I've had in my head over and over and over, analyzing everything that was said or done.

I don't repeat myself online (usually) but I do when I'm speaking.

I belong in the department of redundancy department. :D

oh I forgot.... I have to stay away from the phones at work.... they do the old Briiing... Briiing... and I have to copy it... out loud... until someone picks it up

and I pre-form conversations in my head as well...

someone I used to work with said she and her son repeat songs too... her pet name for it was show-tune or musical tourette's.. (i can't remember which right now) because they would remember one little bit of a song... then the next bit would be a different song.... but it would repeat in the same order... just not one full song

Oh yes. I'm very familiar with the feeling of repetitive thoughts running over and over again in my head. It use to be worse, though.

I can't take props for 'Staircase wit', it's a French term that goes back to the 19th Century...;)

If you're a musician (or have musical knowledge), what you can do is analyze the chord structure, beat, or lyrics for the offending music, and segue out of it.

Example - there's some horrid top 40 song out there (don't know the name, but it seems to be mostly 'no one can change the way I'm feeling'...

Chord Structure - the same as 'Girls just want to have fun', and 'Small Town Girl' by Journey.

Beat - 9" Nails, 'closer to God'...

maybe it can help...;)

As GlassWall, cdc2001c and DanteRF described, previous conversations and alternate versions of them haunt me for weeks afterwards, and I try to plan answers to all the likely questions before I have to talk to someone, and I hear it all as if it were happening.

Most of the time I take my iPod everywhere - if I'm listening to the music, it makes the voices go away. I do end up skipping and lip-syncing along the street, but the funny looks are much better than the conversation-headaches.

I can't get to sleep with loud music on, so it really bugs me then - anyone got any hints on making it go away enough to get to sleep?

I've earned the nickname "The Human Jukebox" because of how many songs I have crammed into my head and the way that they're all attached to trigger keywords.

If someone says a certain word, I have to sing the related song. And I have to sing at least one whole verse and/or chorus of it. If someone tries to talk to me while I'm doing that, I will not answer until I'm done. Or, I'll answer very briefly and then continue.

I try to do it quietly at work, like very very softly under my breath, but it has to be aloud and not just in my head.

When I was a kid I used to do clicking sounds with my tongue or tap on objects whenever I'd get a song stuck in my head. I'm still like this (except for the clicking). When I have a song stuck in my head I'll tap on objects without even really noticing that I'm doing it. It's almost as if I'm in a trance when I have a song stuck in my head. I'll go into this mode where all of my surroundings become almost non-existent and I'll tap away.

Anybody else do anything similar?

Sounds like echolalia... though some of that stuff is a little beyond the scope of the diagnosis.

I get this a lot. But my main problem is repeating what other people have just said. I mimic it pretty well these days as if I am asking to confirm that I heard what they said last and understood it... not always successful...

Look it up though, from what I understand there is a high incidence of people with Asperger's that have it. If it is caused by it I don't know.

That trick doesnt work for me very well, i just go with it and let myself be embarrased at this point

My mental echolalia drives me crazy, I almost always have a melody playing in my head and I often find myself repeating lines movies, TV shows, and documentaries as well as quotes and lines from speeches. My moods are often associated with certain songs (so, for instance, when I'm feeling full of angst Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Green Day will be playing in my head).
