This is something that I learned from a psychologist. 90% of communication in all people (NT's too ) is self-communication. It's not the same as spacing out in your own little world but knowing that it's ok to be busy with my own thoughts makes me feel less guilty for "cutting other people out".

Two ways: 1)Sometimes I'll focus in on what I'm doing so closely that I won't notice what's going on around me. 2) I also zone out sometimes when other people are talking -- not intentionally, and I always feel terrible when it happens -- but that's usually a stress thing.

For me, it means being focused on my work, being with my cats, or thinking about things I like.
