...OK , I'm reviving this one , rather than another one about whether AS 100% disqualifies one from joing any branch of the military , which also spoke of how different branches of the (US) military have different characteristics...
Now , if you'll pardon me here being a little cynical , I hope the more gung-ho/" mystical " about the military will excuse me , it is true that military recruiters in the US:
(1) Can " give exceptions " ( I can't think of the proper word here , I think you'll know what I mean . ) to age/health/legal status/etc. rules to almost any degree .
With the recent US wars , getting military enlistments has become difficult , and it has been wriiten about the US military has given waivers ( I believe that's the word . ) letting in people with all sorts of past legal problems , etc.
( This rather bounces back to the old times , when , before people had to show as many records as they do to-day , let alone before the Internet , younger people , anyway , would , even , join the military " instead of going to jail " , or , " to get out of town " , or considerably younger than the on-paper required age . Old-timers wlill , at times , wax nostalgic over that era/think of to-day in terms of that era . )
(2) San Francisco is decidedly left wing-y , and has other factors as wll that , I daresay , make getting proper quotas of enlistees for recruiters rather , um , " challenging " .

Yes. You are talking about "waivers." Each branch has its own standards. I don't know which branch does regarding many issues.

I do know when they are desperate for bodies, more "waivers" are granted. When they have lots of people volunteering (like now, during a depression), they can be picky about who they take.

I remember back when I first joined. Air Force could be very picky because they never had problems meeting enlistment goals. Army/Marines had to work harder to meet enlistment goals.

...I do , even though I suppose my age and physical shape puts me out of eligibility , think of joining the Reserve , as I said...I think of getting called up to fill someone else younger's slot at some base somewhere , that younger person having been called to somewhere else , file work or the A/V department or something :x :P .
