That's why I greatly doubt that I'll go there any more!

completely agree this is 2008 and GPs should have at least some understanding of AS.

Probably I was the first patient who came to her and said: "Examine me, I suspect myself to have Asperger's syndrome"... She said: "Eeee... AND WHAT ARE THE FEATURES OF THAT SYNDROME YOU DISCOVERED?"
And at the end she said: "You're not autistic, and as for syndroms, you have to read less about them, AND THEY WILL DISAPPEAR" 8O

Guys, may be, we all are just NT's who read too much about the AS and copy the symptoms one from another?

We're wasting our time. We should start reading about "being a millionaire" syndrome to see if we can copy the symptoms.

- Actually I think a lot of people who are in the autistic spectrum are good looking - doctors are just like all the other people: influenced by mass media. They too associatte "pretty" with "normal" or with "supersocial" and "succesful" in a Paris Hilton kind of way.

Can you blame them? The only autistic media coverage we get is of low functioning or obviously affected types. They hardly ever show anyone like Heather from ANTM.

Yeah, that's the stupid thing if you're self-diagnosed; they'll think you're just being a hypochondriac. Not that a hypochondriac mightn't be convinced that he's got autism, because autistic traits are just extreme versions of the norm; but if you're Aspie and you're any good at logic and you've got access to the right information, it's not like you can't figure it out. You may not be a qualified psychologist; but you don't have to be--you only have to be an expert on one condition, not the few hundred that a psychologist has to know. If you know your basic psychology, you know autism, and you have the insight to see yourself objectively, then self-diagnosis is not at all far-fetched.

Yeah... in our state the local chapter of the ASA says... I quote: 'It's a hidden disorder'. I've sat in counseling sessions and heard: "you don't seem AS"... Phittttt... I guess I've learned over the years how to 'fit-in', compensate... It takes a lot of work and I'm tired of it...

Because of this lack of awarness from the NT sector, it has prevented many from getting help dicovering their 'gift'. oh well... Not uncommon to get missed, get told that you are not, or don't appear AS.... 'tis sad for more reasons than just DX'ing. Sad because a lot of talent is being missed....not addressed...

I've been told the same thing. I went to my first support group for Asperger's about three months ago and the first thing I was told walking in (by another aspie, mind you) is "You don't look autistic." I may border a bit on the NT side, but that doesn't mean that I don't have it.

Anyways, I thought nothing of it. If anything, I took it as a compliment.

One of my cousins whom I lived with in Michigan told me straight up he thought Asperger's was a bunch of bull**** because I didn't act any different from anyone else my age, except for the shyness. I respected that in a way too though because he knew and treated me no different. As far as he was concerned, I was perfectly normal.

I took my 4 year old step-nephew to the park (he's autistic too) and he accidentally tripped another kid but can't speak well so it didn't sound like he was appoligizing so the mom yelled at us when I tried to tell her that he was severly autistic she didn't believe me because 'he didn't look autistic'
