In that case, it's painted lines, "islands," those reflective dots, on and on...

But not cars. Not part of the road...

you might be an Aspie if you compare and contrast the various answers to a seemingly simple question. . .

 Merle

You have to realize. I drive on raods ALL THE TIME, And I STILL figured asphalt! I think I will ask my mother what SHE would say!

it might come to you as a shock, but we have roads in Oregon, too. I also drive on roads all the time, and everytime I come to a stop sign I put my feet on the road,( I ride a 150cc Kymco "People" motor scooter) so I could have said, my tennis shoes! and really blow their minds!

I would have said tarmac.

While I haven't heard that particular question I have had psychologist types throw in something off topic just to try and trip me up in my monologue.

When I read the question I answered "tar" (or the asphalt material). I don't think that I would have ever answered cars or tires; it doesn't seem to answer what goes on the surface.

I just thought I'd share this. In the midst of my assessment my psychologist asked me,

"What goes on the surface of a road?"

She wouldn't give me any clues. I was a bit puzzled, and then I answered,

"The tarmac and then white lines"

Apparently, NT people will answer this question by saying 'vehicles/traffic'.

Most people with Aspergers will tend to say tyres.

I picked my answer because I figured that roads are made of several layers, and that the tarmac and white lines would make up the surface layer...

What answer do you get?

Tarmac.

I took the question to mean "what makes up the surface of a road?" After all, the road is made up of gravel and other compacted material that sometimes has additional hardener (asphalt, tarmac, whatever) on top, but not always. I see lots of gravel roads when I hike.

I would have phrased the other question: "what travels on the road?" or "who uses the road?". A: I do, of course.

This one is fun. :D

Tarmac is not the right answer, since the tarmac constitutes part of the road. Not to mention that we don't know if the road is made out of tarmac. What if we are talking about a rough road in the middle of the woods?

Like asking, "what goes over a human being?" and answering the "head!" Not really. The head is part of the human being and therefore it cannot go over itself. A hat would be a more reasonable answer.

Yeah, I already said that. We may ALL know that. Still, it IS interesting!

I didn't mean to imply you never drove, etc... Sorry if I seemed to be trying to offend you.

Wow! I'm amazed to see how many of you would also pick tarmac, or try to describe the literal surface of the road, just like I did.

I'll give you a laugh, my NT partner's answer was 'roadkill'. She says it was the first thing that popped into her head  I wish my brain was quirky likes hers!

I will have to admit, I had to read the question 4 times before I understood what it was asking. When I finally figured out the question, I thought car.. Hrm.

My son said car, shrugging, as if it were a no-brainer.

ImMelody-
Not every aspie's the same. Anyway, had I been given a long quiz full of these questions, I might have answered many in the "normal" NT way, as I tend to think in terms of what exact answer they want. This question is one I would have answered the AS way, but many others I'm sure my mind would have used my "adaptive" way to think in order to answer the question. Perhaps this is the case for you for this question?

An analogy:

What goes on a table: plates, etc.
What goes on the surface of a table: table cloth

similarly:

What goes on a road: cars, etc.
What goes on the surface of a road: ?

Thus my answer... nothing... which I took to not be the expected answer. (I posted already, but I'm explaining my thinking better here.)
