It is absolute trash. It would make people who believe in it less sympathetic to the poor or ill because "they attract" what they get from the universe. Could you really tell someone they attracted their cancer because of their attitude? That is such a load of manure!

It is just about greed. Do you see all those wealthy and famous people who have addictions and they are not happy at all? I think people should try to go after what will make them happy in their lives but often people don't really know what will make them happy.

Someone gave me "The Power of Positive Thinking" after I got pretty sick with thyroid problems and in the book, it said I had caused my own problem cause thyroid problems are due to "feeling like your voice is stifled". What a load of crap! Autoimmune disorders run in my family. I hate that crap like this spits in the face of science, for starters - and also, if you are gonna go against science, shouldn't it be to hope for a miracle, and to make people feel better, not worse?

I agree that The Secret is BS that Oprah can use to justify why she has more money than God and think she attracted it and deserves it all and can spend it all on Loubotins while not giving a sh** for people who need food around the world - all the while guilt-tripping her lower middle-class audience into donating $100 to the poor, while 10 of her shoes would help the poor more. But she attracted the shoes! If only the poor had attracted some food, they wouldn't be starving. Silly poor.

Totally agree with all that. This new age crap is seriously damaging propaganda for self-obsessed fools.

Interesting that you should mention thyroid problems. I'm going into hospital tomorrow for eye surgery for my Graves' disease. My voice is stifled, then...?

I haven't read The Secret but as a New Ager I do believe in the power of positive thought and that we are creating our realities through our thoughts, beliefs and emotions.

I'm currently reading one of the Seth books - Seth was a spirit who was channelled by the medium Jane Roberts from the early 1960s until her death in 1984. Seth stated many times that we create our own reality, and one of the books he dictated, The Nature of Personal Reality goes into great detail about this.

To talk of it in basic terms, what I have read and what I believe is that we are all pure energy existing in physical form and that the thoughts we transmit are energy. I believe we are creating our realities with our thoughts, beliefs and emotions and so I am trying to dispel negative thoughts and concentrate on positive thinking in order to improve my reality. This is quite difficult, but when I have done it properly it has worked.

Remember David Schirmer from "The Secret"? The guy who says he used to receive only bills through the mail, but then started receiving checks instead? this is what he visualized:

Hahaha, loved it ! !! !! !!

Skippy, that sounds logical, it could be true. But not at the very detailed level as these people try to make it appear.

Positive thinking can make you feel better.

It cannot, however, make you have a fancy car and tons of money in the bank. Only hard work or sheer luck (being born into money, for example) can do that.

And that is what is wrong with The Secret. It is false promises. Visualizing what you want, "keeping your eyes on the prize", and having a positive attitude are wonderful. But just sitting there and visualizing tons of money won't give you any money.

It's the same sham as any other faith based philosophy. I have asked the universe for what I want and I have went out and actually worked for it. The latter works much better than the former.

Never read the book, but I do have the movie.

Utter garbage.

I'm not saying so just because I don't "buy into" self help or positive thinking. I do. But there comes a point at which, after many months and even YEARS of putting it to use, and it only working to a limited extent, one begins to think "there is something more going on here than meets the eye."

I know quite a few people heavily into self help and positive thinking, for whom it has done not only a lot of good, but has also brought them great success. Most of them, when I tell them it works for me, but has not worked to the extent it has for them, tell me "it's because you aren't really doing what you need to do."

I'm here to tell you that is bull. I have done as much as I am capable of. Something else has been holding me back, and limiting my actual capabilities.

Two things actually. Autism and ADD.

Until those are dealt with, I've come as far as I am able.
