For diagnosed aspies: Do you meet these criteria?
Can I throw my 2 cents in? (I'm self diagnosed but found the top 10 list interesting please???) I'll list them and what applies to me.
1. I find social situations confusing.
(I'm nervous in a social situation unless I know people example my family) To put it into perspective I started Pre-GED classes in Sept. 2003 was scarred and nervous (maybe this was due being home schooled since 5th grade) I finished that and a GED class within 1 month then Jan.2004 had to do pre classes (before starting College Courses) There I had multiple teachers ( a new thing for me hence still not secure) Then Summer 2004 I had a RUDE teacher so that was a let down in Fall 2004 I was FINALLY SECURE/COMFORTABLE! (Sadly in Feb.2005 I was suspended for jokingly threatening a teacher) (long story)
2. I find it hard to make small talk
(I'm not to sure about this one.)
3. I tend to turn any conversation back onto myself or my own
topic of interest
(I think I do this the family starts talking and I say I can't wait until X game comes out or I did Y today read a book, game etc.)
4. I am good at picking up details and facts.
(not to sure about this one either.)
5. I find it hard to work out what other people are thinking and feeling
(confusing I'm not sure how to interpret that but I know I have questioned an action because I beleive my mom will react one way and she'd say why didn't you do X I'd say well I thought you'd get upset.) Not sure if this applies.
6. I can focus on certain things for very long periods
(I do this with videogames.)
7. People often say I was rude even when this was unintentional
(This happens everday I have this trait 10 fold 1,000,000,000 BILLION PERCENT!! !! !! !!
8. I have unusually strong, narrow interests
(Yep I focused on talking about the Dark Knight Box Office for a couple weeks LOL!)
9. I do certain things in a very inflexible, repetitive way
(Not sure on this one I know I do try to plan my day to a point or I get confused example:pee, let dogs outside, dishes, shower (uh uh uh) oh ya..... (I have to plan or I forget!)
10. I have always had difficulty making friends
(This is 100% true I have 0 friends at the moment yes people on WP/AIM are friends but I'm talking people you go do stuff with OUTSIDE OF FAMILY!! ! I was bullied and had 2-3 friends from K-5th grade then when I started homeschool they went onto to public school boyfriends socializing and didn't hang around anymore.
The Autism Research Centre at Cambridge puts out a poster called How to recognise Asperger Syndrome (note: this is a pdf). It has a list of ten characteristics, the premise being that if you have all ten, you might have AS. It suggests that you need to have all ten to have AS (it only suggests you call for a diagnosis if you have all ten). I thought it would be interesting to see how these match up to those of us who have a diagnosis.
The ten characteristics are:
- I find social situations confusing
- I find it hard to make small talk
- I tend to turn any conversation back onto myself or my own
topic of interest - I am good at picking up details and facts
- I find it hard to work out what other people are thinking and feeling
- I can focus on certain things for very long periods
- People often say I was rude even when this was unintentional
- I have unusually strong, narrow interests
- I do certain things in a very inflexible, repetitive way
- I have always had difficulty making friends
1, 4, 6, and 8 and maybe 10.
This test is too subjective. I think that what each sentence defines can be interpreted too many different ways.

7. and similar tend to sound like trick questions to me, the problem is, it was a very long time I actually dealt with people, so I have no idea if they would consider me rude. Though in the internet I've been very blunt to some people without noticing I guess the web doesn't count.
That would be the only one logic forced me to answer with a no, as for the other questions, it is an outstanding yes, except for #9 which is a kinda.

The ten characteristics are:[list=1][*]I find social situations confusing
[*]I find it hard to make small talk
yes
[*]I tend to turn any conversation back onto myself or my own
topic of interest
Umm I think I do this sometimes but not a lot.
[*]I am good at picking up details and facts
yes
[*]I find it hard to work out what other people are thinking and feeling
yes
[*]I can focus on certain things for very long periods
Sometimes
[*]People often say I was rude even when this was unintentional
yes
[*]I have unusually strong, narrow interests
yes
[*]I do certain things in a very inflexible, repetitive way
Used to, not so much anymore
I have always had difficulty making friends
yes
not diagnosed yet..but:
1. I find social situations confusing i wouldnt use the word confusing. so no. just uncomfortable and akward.
2. I find it hard to make small talk no. I have trained myself to do this very well. But it doesn't come naturally
3. I tend to turn any conversation back onto myself or my own
topic of interest constantly
4. I am good at picking up details and facts yes
5. I find it hard to work out what other people are thinking and feeling I've become very good at this
6. I can focus on certain things for very long periods definitely
7. People often say I was rude even when this was unintentional no
8. I have unusually strong, narrow interests not really
9. I do certain things in a very inflexible, repetitive way somewhat
10. I have always had difficulty making friendsyes
I'm diagnosed as mild. I'd say the first 9 apply to me. For 10, I don't always have difficulty making friends but I have difficulty in keeping friends. Making friends is more of a go with the flow thing, if I see someone I like I'd find it hard to be friends with a particular person.
I agree. Take 9 for example. "Certain things"? How many things? Doesn't everyone do "certain things" in inflexible ways?
This list would be improved if several examples were given for each item. The examples would need to be designed to represent the variety of ways in which these traits can be expressed, and how pronounced they need to be in order to differentiate the person from the general population.

I'm not diagnosed but they definately all apply to me.. accept for people saying im rude?... i dont remember that.. maybe a little.. but how can they even put that in there? surely a person with aspergie can go through life without being called rude by somebody? that seems purely circumstancial.
Like a dark labyrinth full of unseen, deadly hazards, with Paris Hilton giving incoherent directions over an intercom and gnomes ambushing me around every turn. Oh, and I'm navigating not having slept in 48 hours. And I have malaria.
I've been learning how and I am, according to all sources, doing well, but there are certain things I still will not tolerate. I will not tolerate being asked what kind of music I listen to. I will not tolerate sexual questions in small talk.
topic of interest
Yes. Most people are not interested in interesting things. I feel the need to educate them. If they resist, why am I talking to them anyway? They are dull and they don't "get" me. After this litmus test, I let them talk about themselves some.
This is not as pronounced as it was when I was a child (when I was four, I had the memory of a supercomputer), but I still know all sorts of useless information about my favorite subjects, and my memory is routinely praised.
unless these people are characters in a book, yes.
Actually, no. I have major ADHD. I can't sit still to read for more than thirty minutes. However, I maintain the same intense interests for months or years. So it's actually a long-term-short-term draw.
This has diminished with age.
Hell yes.
Hell yes.
Hell yes.

Definately.
I've gotten better at it, but it takes alot of effort.
topic of interest
Yes.
Yes, most always.
I've gotten better at this. The feeling part anyways, I seem to never know what they're thinking.
Oh heck yes, to the point were I block everything else out.
Sometimes.
Strong yes, narrow no.
Yes.
I can make friends when I really want to, I just can't keep them too well.

That's a very imaginative description!
I'm betting #7 is pretty uncommon. its more an external thing; less to do with the aspie and more to do with the social situation.
That being said, all apply to me but #7. Nobody would dare say that to me, due to my size, sex and appearance. Its socially unacceptable. I have no doubt that people feel it though.
I have a diagnosis.
