I had a limited knowledge of English when I started kindergarten (my first language was German). Still, I managed to pass the entrance examination. My teacher was inexperienced, however, and diagnosed me as hyperactive. (AS was not known about in the educational system in 1969.) A year later, however, I had a teacher who believed in me and discovered I was intelligent. I was reading at fifth grade level in first grade and had the vocabulary of a high school student by the time I was in sixth grade.
