I love it and hate it
I haven't driven for many years. When I did, I got very confident on the routine 5-mile drive to and from work. Had a good coach while learning, did that route every day with her, for months, before my test - as we worked at the same place and lived near each other, it was an ideal arrangement. That repetition really helped - years before I'd failed my test twice, just couldn't "get it."
Didn't drive long enough to notice anybody but myself doing things wrong
A few people cut in or wouldn't let me in, nothing really aggressive. It was hard to get used to the flexible nature of some of the rules - the manual looks nicely systematic and objective, but in some circumstances you can cause an accident by obeying them
For one particular junction there were 3 ways of doing it - the book way, the police way, and the actual way
.
But new routes were a big problem - I couldn't navigate and drive safely at the same time. So I'd err on the side of safety and get lost. I could never anticipate the correct lane for the next turn. The road markings don't always make it clear in time. I love the motorways - everything's clearly marked on those.
One reason I don't drive now is that I've always felt I've got "something missing" compared to other people, something that might kill me if I hit the wrong situation. But I'm still considering it.
