That's intersting as I do find that I enjoy being antagonistic towards people who have stupid looking avatars. since they look stupid of course, while I'm very friendly with people who have 'welcoming' looking avatars. Maybe I need to do an avatar thread.

Gee, Gary, why don't you just come out and say what you really mean?!

Anyway, I wonder if my avatar looks inviting. It's a picture of Helen Keller. She was one of my special interests as a kid. I totally related to her having to find her way in the world through a different path. I like the picture of her because she's turned away from the camera. It's obvious (to me) that her parents wanted a photo that didn't show her as she really was. I had parents like that, so the photo expresses some of my history. Plus, she is turned away from the eyes of the photographer, which resonates with me as well.

But I hope people respond to me because they're interested in what I say, not because they like my avatar.

I have this avatar because it's from my favorite movie Benny & Joon. In it is Johnny Depp and Mary Stuart Masterson.

I have gotten some attention for it from members here :D

I'm not sure. I only ask since it was recommended that I do before asking stupid questions.

I suspect that advice isn't meant so much as a general admonition to read people's stats before replying as it is to check their profile before asking them questions about say what they do for a living, because for example my profile says that I'm an illustrator and a programmer.

p.s. Is my avatar stupid looking? Just curious what you consider -- I won't be offended either way -- I think everybody has those kinds of feelings to some extent.

I don't really care if it is, as the avatar doen't mean a lot to me....wait... yes it does mean a lot to me and even represents who I am on a non symbolic level. This image was made by fooling around with a program at school 4 years back, and I have come to use it to represent me wherever I can be represented with an image.

On a side note, I'm curious, what do people think of it anyways?

I find it visually easily recognized, but it doesn't generate any strong feelings in me in any particular direction... kind of like looking at one of those colored blocks they use in neurological testing - easy to see what it is, but totally neutral.

Yes, I often look at the persons profile. I try to stop doing that though-- others probably would find it a bit creepy, I'm guessing.

I'm not sure why someone would consider it creepy that a person looked at information they had chosen to make public... That would be kind of like saying its creepy to read articles about Barack Obama. It's information about another person that they've made publicly available.

I don't always look, but sometimes something about a poster's writing or their point of view on a subject makes me curious! I'm just a nosey g*t.

I do it sometimes, if the specific type of diagnosis or location of a member has any relevance to the topic. I don't like being wrong about something that I could have known if only I had read before. In short, I hate guessing and try to avoid that.

I almost never do... usually just to check gender (I wish guys wouldn't use girl's pics as their avatar, & visa-versa  )

I check the age of posters before answering them... wish more people had their ages listed.

I did check the profile page for a 12-year-old who was posting some very mature comments... wound up reading his old posts, and marvelled at his maturity, even for an aspie :)

Not when I read a post, but when recieving a private message. The posts only depends on what I can relay to.
Some of the posters can be hard to understand though, but then again, It might not help that much reading their profile. I bet you have read mine, Gary?

I never look at profiles before answering a thread. Sometimes, I admit, I don't always answer the thread due to who started it but that is very rare. I'd say 95% of the time I go by subject and subject alone. I have to really like the topic or I don't have the desire to answer. When I see the same topics over and over I think what more is there to say?
