Is it KinKaid or KinKade? I only pay attention to his work when I have the latest issue of Avon or am looking for a new jigsaw puzzle at Wal Greens so the proper spelling eludes me since I am not a connoisseur.

Click on this link.

Thomas Kinkade (I've been spelling his name wrong) is known as "The Painter of Light" whose mass-produced pieces feature a romantic, nostalgiac, or "spiritual" theme much appreciated by people who have grown weary of black-velvet Elvises, big-eyed kittens, and dogs playing poker.

ok - so i am in australia. i have just clicked on the link and discovered Kincade, the "painter of light."
My world view is forever changed.

Am I the only one who just doesn't get it? Poetry, paintings, just about anything, unless the artist or author expresses whatever they mean directly, its just pretty much lost on me. If O go on a tour of a museum, and they say things like "this was meant to symbolize this" I'm usually like "where on earth did they come up with that?" Is this an Aspie thing?

actually i used to be like that too, but after i took a class at uni about culture and art i now understand it allot more.. you can interpret things in many ways and there really isnt much consensus around what a piece of art means ect... i found that i actually like some arts, but only if they have the logical aspect to them...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fountain_(Duchamp) <---- this one is a good example in many ways...

Yes, I'm bad at interpreting things. It makes English class really tough and I'm constantly looking stuff up on Sparknotes. Why can't anything just be what it is?

The thing that annoys me about some art is that you can only get it if you are already in the scene. I mean, it references other art so much, the art is really just a theoretical construct that relates only to the art world, and not to anything else. Of course, academic output in all professions is probably like this - professional resources and research are necessarily focussed towards themselves. But it just happens that I'm not interested in 'professional' art. I used to be, but then I dropped out of art school. Now I'm just into visual stimulation. Content annoys me.

The problem is that the people declaring the correct interpretations are usually reading in ridiculously, adding far-fetched and illogical meanings to fairly direct pieces, or pieces perhaps not intended to be interpreted symbolically at all.

I myself being an artist (now realizing my talents which I left alone in highschool) (don't worry, I short-change myself, I perseverate all the time, never being satisfied with what I make lol) , I have great admiration for arts, etc. However, I don't understand the intention of other artists or what they are implying. I can speculate, but I never try to interpret. My belief is that unless the artist specifically states what their pieces/works mean, we can never fully interpret or understand them. Every artist and their view of the world is different. Hell, some of the stuff I've drawn I don't really know why I drew them; only when someone who knows me says they think it means [insert meaning] - that my subconscious is speaking then do I begin to speculate my own stuff, in which case I just say "Hmm, I suppose it could."

i just love EVERYthing about art - from my own painting practice through to reading about it - through to ripping apart the critics' takes on artists' works, through to writing book reviews on art books - which i do for a regional arts mag where i live.
IT is my numero uno special interest and has been my WHOLE life. the intensity of my relationship with art has waxed and waned over the years, but my intense passion for it - all consuming - is the great love of my life. i'll talk about fra angelico through to giotto through to picasso and pollock or de kooning through to australian contemporary artists through to cezanne and vuillard and bonnard and....and....and.........

NT's see me coming and run a mile sometimes........hehehe.

Oy millie... are you female? I have been wondering about these "special interests" since Art is one of the major loves of my life, but I've never felt particularly inclined to absorb facts about it. I collect images, textures, lighting effects, but I could care less about who did what. (Tho I've been reading about it lately becuz I want to develope an original style and you cant be original unless you know what everyone else has done...) I look at art the way some people look at poetry and deconstruct from there...
