I use them alot with people whom I don't know very well, or don't know at all. With close friends and family, I am much less formal.

I'm kinda the same, actually, I use them to excess with shopkeepers or people who I don't know very well when I want them to like me, but with my family I tend to forget.

It's not I have to have my mother reminding me to say it, I do it already myself. I have to remind myself to say the word. It's not real natural behavior for me, since I know these words don't mean anything to others, they're just part of social rules. I always say please and thank you, others seem to do it less than me. I'm more polite eventually than others, I guess.

Haha, I also thank the bus drivers although I only do it because everyone (and I mean everyone) else does it at my college when they get off the campus shuttles. I've never seen anyone do that anywhere else before, but I do it just because I don't want to look rude (even though I feel stupid saying it...I mean, these drivers are on a route with required stops, it's not like they're going out of their way to do anything...plus they don't even run their routes very well to begin with).

People thank bus drivers around here. It always seems bizarre to me. As you say, it's their job to drive a certain route and stop at certain places - stopping to let someone off the bus isn't even providing them with an individual service, let alone a special favor.

i'm another one that never used them as a child/teen and now have been overcompensating. i had a receptionist job one summer during college and i would say things like, "so-and-so, call on line one, thank you." i was known as the thank you girl.

i still sometimes forget to say please, like when i ask someone to pass me something, etc... my brain thinks it's implied, just like reciprical questions.
