I always change mine (if it's not me, it's of an interest), but my current one is showing what you'd see if you saw me out there; I always look down.

Hello, Gary. You always seem to come up with some real good topics. Well, I just don’t like to be taken pictures of, especially to take one of myself. I think I look quite normal if I’m relaxed. So I just lit up a smoke, felt relaxed and pressed the button. I can live with that picture, but sometimes I think it might be offending in a way. I might just try to take another pic. When looking in the mirror, I think I see myself, but when I see a pic of me I often see a strange weirdo.
This lead me to think; Do I look like I think I do, or am I looking completely different in other ppl eyes? I have always wondered about that.

At first I went for 3 months without having any avatar at all,I wasn't familiar with internet
forums and things that went with them. Then I had a simple photo of the planet Pluto, but I
thought that was too boring so I changed it. I haven't posted my real photo because I think
I come from a generation where things were less open and a degree of privacy was normal.
I don't like getting my photo taken in general

What are you talking about? My avatar is a picture of me :P

Seriousy though, I'm not ashamed or embarrassed of my 'IRL' appearance. I just like to use a pic of a character that I identify strongly with. It didn't really occur to me to use a photo of me... I've always used icons based on my interests to represent myself.

Well, the cat in my avatar is me in animal form (Not my fursona, but me as I would appear in cat form).

Really, I use avatars because I like being able to customise them :D

personally I think anonymity is the best thing about Internet. when I walk the streets I usually wear big sunglasses, hats or hoods so that people wouldn't see me. so I see no reason to display my face up close on any forum.

I did post my pics on here though, but in the Members Only section. I consider all WP members friends and friends are allowed to see me. random lurkers only get this pic of Chan Marshall (and I guess I don't have to add that I am a big fan of her music).

I just like entomology. There's no psychological factor or anything.

Most of mine are arty, and naturistic, but of me. I guess I like to show my hidden side here, and my more "unusual" style photos which are a sort of reflection of my AS; my fascination with tiny details, my interest in the shapes, textures, colours of the things around me (usually leaves and flowers).

I don't hate how I look per se, but I do hate seeing photos of myself. It also like to leave some distance between my online presence on different sites. I like them to be linked but not quite confirmable. A photo would end that.

I think I need to shrink my avatar but oh well.

I chose the Marvin from the BBC version of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy because:
1. Douglas Adams was my all time favorite author
2. Marvin was my favorite character
3. Many people think of the new Marvin as Marvin
4. Robots are just cool!

Mine shows one of my main obsessions, the Prince of Persia game. I don't think there is any real meaning to it, other than just like PoP, after I overcome one dilemma life throws me another, and another...

< No this isn't me :D He's much better looking than I am

I prefer to stay anonymous on forums. I choose usernames that generally reflect me or my hobbies and then an avatar to suit that. I feel like I'm always serving the Marsther i.e. my boss, my colleagues, my family etc etc, hence Igor.

I could have gone for the Disney Igor (too naff) or a more traditional version, but liked this one from an old film, because it was a bit less of a standard Igor.

I am quite fond of you photos, I could never look so good in a photo, and often I am ebaressed of what I look like in photos and wonder if that is what I look like all the time. Plus, most of my photos I look upset. Your phots have a very nice artistic quality to them, and I admire you for being able to do that.

I don't use pics of me, because.... well, I don't see the point, really. My face is my face, I don't really relate to my face, it's there everyday, just a face. It's.... boring.

I use avatars that I relate to. Mostly involving Kingdom Hearts since I'm obsessed with the game series. Mainly involving one of the characters I relate to most; mostly Nobodies. Also somehow relating to my current mood/life status/wishes.
Such as the current avatar:
Image
So. First, the character: Naminé. I've always related to her most. She's standing there, waiting... it reminds me of patience. Then there's the flower pod... representing sleep, dreaming and restoral of memories. (I'm often tired, life often seems vague and dream like. My ability to remember things generally sucks.) The color scheme makes me think of the emotion of being depressed, but also apathy, calmness, and a dream-like state. (Which has "me" written all over it.) Finally, the words: "There will be blue skies".... what I want. I want winter to end (both literally and metaphorically.) I want blue skies.

....I don't expect anyone to understand my mini-rant, there.

Why wouldn't you expect people to understand it? I seem to have gotten it perfectly.

*Blink* Oh. I thought parts of it wouldn't make sense without having played the KH series...

I have changed my avatar a few times, and more often than not, I haven't had one at all. My current one is of my son. I guess I chose it because no matter what special interests that I may ever have my kids always are my primary special interest. Of course, I just think he's cute, and I'm very proud of him. :) I'm also in the picture, even though you can't see my head. I kinda like it that way.
