Ok - I've been pondering this...

While I pretty much only wear flip flops, I am very particular about which flip flops. A friend gave me some really cute flip flops - the old-school kind with the rubber strap. I wore them and they killed my toes.

The flip flops I wear are Reef (and sometimes Teva). They are neoprene and have a thin webbed strap. The neoprene is heaven on your feet and the strap isn't even noticeable. If I try to "go wild" and get a different model - like with a thick strap or leather soles, I'll go crazy.

Here are my newest conquests. Ony 18 bucks! (U.S.)

what do you mean "when growing up?"

in Oz we call them "thongs."

i wear thongs every day to this day. i have them on now. pink ones.

that is all i wear in summer. (i have a spare pare of sandals in case i cannot go somewhere with my favourite footwear.)

Over here a "thong" is a very tiny version of underwear - sometimes called "Butt floss".

I've never cared for the feeling of the plastic between my toes, or the sole of the thing flopping up against the bottom of my foot when I walk. (That entire flipping and flopping thing that they get their name from just doesn't work for me.) I'd rather have a pair of shoes so that the sole is always tight under my foot pad, or to go barefoot. And flip-flops never seem to stay oriented directly under my foot.

The style that is more like a slipper is slightly better, but the strap across the top of my foot starts to wear on my skin after a while and is irritating. Wearing socks between them and my foot helps - but I'm told that this is improper to do. Not that I really care what society has set as standards of appropriate footwear.

The one thing I do like about sandals is that they let my feet breath. But I can't wear them at work because of dress code. Of course the dress code is discriminatory because women are permitted to wear open toed shoes and shoes with a piece that goes between their toes like a flip-flop does. I'm told that for women those are dress shoes. So why can't a guy wear "dress shoes" that are made like a sandal? Dress code.

Sorry - I'm getting off on a rant......

ok ok...so we australians spout forth about thongs and you perceive it as butt floss!

:lmao:

(and when i talk about all the chilli i have on everything, you think it is some cooked up chilli mince instead of the chilli sauce or raw, chopped chilli i sprinkle on everything.)

most australian kids really do grow up wearing thongs. and i am still wearing them. i live in the subtropics so i wear them about 7 months of the year.

Well I wear filp flops/sandals/slops all the time during summer. In winter however its different. This summer I could probably count on one hand the number of times I chose sneakers over flip flops.

I don't mind flip-flops but I HATE the feeling of sand inside them!

No, I've never been able to wear flip-flops because of that plastic toe thing. I'm very particular about shoes. I cannot wear "normal" tennis shoes, because I cannot stand that sole/arch thing against my heel. I have "special" tennis shoes that are flat on the ground. An added plus of those shoes is that it's easier to toe-walk in them. The vast majority of my sensory issues are tactile ones, especially dealing with clothing. I indeed was the child who couldn't stand tags in her shirt. I also have never been able to wear pants with a zipper, and all of my clothes have to be loose; tight-fitting clothes are intolerable for me. Anyway, even in the few types of shoes that are comfortable for me, I always kick off my shoes when I have a chance. I love being barefoot. I never wear socks. They're pointless to me, and all they do is make your feet hot and add extra sensory info. Who needs 'em?!

Same in the UK, imagine my amazement when soon after arriving in Australia I went to a cable water ski park, I asked them if I could barefoot and they suggested that it would helpful if I wore thongs 8O

You know, this is an interesting thought as well (your second paragraph). You see, I like for my toes to touch because I like to flick my big toe over the next toe all the time, and with something between them, it hurts badly when I flick my toes. But the toe flicking is a habit I do subconsciously, so it's going to happen whether I like it or not.

I do that all the time too.

Don't it hurt your toes to touch the hard surface of thongs?

Wow, love it and Neoprene?

I know one member here who's in love with neoprene.

Anyway, I grew up with flip-flops. In fact I wear more flip-flops almost all the time in warm weather. I hate the idea of my feet being trapped in clunky shoes.

Then again, it depends on flip-flops. They can be made to hurt like hell depending on the material....especially those straps that pinch everytime you walk..... :x

I got a pair of flip flops last year as a birthday present I wore them once to be honest with you I am always looking for an oppertunity to wear them but I don't. You need to be bear footed to wear and it is rare for me to spend the day bare footed.

You know, I've never even tried wearing flip-flops. It's against my footwear principle to wear anything not securely strapped to my feet. This just shows that "sensory issue" is different for everybody. I wear socks all the time, either wool or cotton, so it's not flip-flop compatible anyway. My shoes also have to be flat, supportive, very comfortable and have good bumps at the bottom for traction. I can't believe all those shoes I found with smooth bottoms out there. 8O The only thing not required is looking cute. :D I have some very ugly shoes that I just adore, because I can walk for several miles in them with no discomfort. I wore flat, comfortable shoes for my wedding, too. I simply decorated them with some pearls.

Not really. I often wore sandals though, which is somewhat comparable. Now I've come to prefer more solid, lasting footwear that I can wear at any time of the year.

No, and I still hate flip-flops. I hate something between the toes. I do like regular sandals with lots of straps for summer, but personally I would rather have my feet completely covered no matter how hot it is.

I have an unusually large gap between my first and second toes. Flip flops fit between the gap perfectly, so I've never had problems with them. :D
