Sometimes you've gotta break down and take a plane. But then, when you get to that place where only a plane can take you, you can hop a train and go to all the places the plane can't take you. Trains, planes, automobiles, in that order for me.

I guess it falls in with the idea that we're obsessed with anything technical...

I hate that stereotype though. I get a mental image of the anorak clad trainspotter archetype.

Thomas the tank engine used to terrify me when I was a kid.

Nowadays, I quiet enjoy being on trains because it means you are heading somewhere but I have no interest in the train itself.

Just been checking it on youtube... Its the over exaggerated facial expressions and the camera zooming in so close. Similar to the horror of face to face interaction for an autistic kid, just put on this steaming great charging train. Diesel, the true fear of my childhood...

I think it depends on what you're exposed to when you're a kid. When I was five or so my mum brought an entire collection (a whole box full) of early edition (from the 1940's and 50's) Famous Five books at a garage sale, I read the lot straight away (while other kids my age were reading picture books) and I've been hooked on fantasy and fiction books ever since. Reading fiction was all I ever did or wanted to do as a child. I was obsessed. I even imitated the language of the fictional characters from Famous Five (and thus sounded rather bizarre - imagine a 6 year old going around talking about the "horse and trap" or "hols" or "lets get our trunks on!" every time it was time to go swimming).

The best Christmas present I ever got in my life was about three whole series's of Tamora Pierce books. I couldn't believe it when I opened up my presents on Christmas day and there were so many books there! It is one of the happiest memories in my life.

My favourite birthday presents have always been books, but for some reason people rarely give them to me.

if we're talking birds then copters are my favs.

The reason for this is that in a heli you enjoy the sky, with a huge passenger plane you're trying to conquer it, every now and then we are reminded of that we do not belong up there and headlines read "Plane crash, people dead".

I've been waiting for an excuse to post this picture:

Image

It's a scan of a pair of pyjamas I've slept in, on and off, for the last thirteen years, mending them until they started to fall apart at the seams. The pattern was part of what drew me to them in the first place, though it was the pleasant feel of the fabric against my skin that got me hooked.

I wasn't into trains as a teen though; I was into dinosaurs and commercial airliners (especially "Airport" disaster movies and the Concorde).

I was into trains and train sets as a kid but more than the physical train I was into model train magazines. I loved looking at shots of those super-detailed miniature sets with the fake mountains and water. I was more into the miniature aspect of the landscaping than the trains, though they were interesting too. I used to read in detail about how they made the fake water, trees, the mountains, the grading around the tracks, the waterfalls, etc. I modified my own train layout but could never match, or even seriously attempted to match, the skill level I found in those magazines.

I was never obsessed with trains or dinosaurs when I was younger.
Someone in my social group has a interest in trains though.
