How Many People Here Are actually Autistic or have Aspergers

I reserected this since there have been so many new threads recently asking a similar question but in a different way and those recent post questioning the existance of AS. There used to be some fairly good stats on this a few years ago but I can't find the threads. If I remember right the ratio used to be something in the neighbothood of 10 to 1 (undiagnosed/diagnosed) and now I think it is much smaller like maybe 3 to 1 (3 undiagnosed/1diagnosed) based upon my quick count. Is the change because more people are getting a diagnoses or just because more people are partipating in the discussions.

Well you're getting close. Only a few people so far have been pushed to the verge of laughter.

I agree and me to I guess if you need a label it would be "Aspergers" but not that straight forward as have many associated conditions some diagnosed, some not.... but yes we are as diverse and varied as those not on the autism spectrum... and for those of us that are diagnosed in a way lucky as many still searching and thats what I feel this site is partly about....

Of course I am also well aware of the many unable to get diagnosed finding someone to do so, cost, doctors giving wrong information and/or simply deciding to stay undiagnosed many do when find out later in life, does not mean they are not on the autism spectrum as such!

I agree as I am an autistic person and one part of my diagnostic criteria is aspergers!

I was dx'ed in the 9th grade.

I was dx'd a week ago.

Before that, I knew I had it for 3 years.

I was DXd in 6th grade.

You're like a stalker, you know that right? Yet again a thinly veiled indirect thread trying to get at me. What will it be tomorrow Gary? Will find yet another way to indirectly target me?

I have PDD-NOS and they are thinking of switching to AS. Therefore I am on the spectrum.

I'm in the process of getting diagnosed. right now, my psychiatrist says it is very likely that i have AS. he's almost done with everything, he just wants to go over a few things this tuesday.

Like WhittenKitten, I got to the point at which I was informed it is likely that I have AS. I never took it beyond that point to make anything official. That said, my son was later diagnosed with Asperger's and others in my family have been diagnosed with Autism and Asperger's. Basically, we are a family on the spectrum.

The issue of official v. unofficial diagnosis comes up quite often here, and I immediately think of Tourette's syndrome which also runs in my family. We have had two "official" diagnoses of TS in my extended family, but it doesn't take a doctor to identify the other ticcing machines in my family. Should I tell them they don't "officially" have TS or tics and therefore are just like everyone else?

I do agree that some people who post here clearly do no have AS, but for most I cannot tell.

This being the Internet, we will never ferret out who does and does not have AS. Anyone can alter their identity and traits in their profile or postings. I can't be sure that "garyww" is who he says he is (for the record I trust what I have read from him), but that is just part of communicating on the Internet.

I was diagnosed with Asperger's like 10 years ago. I got ADHD too. I don't really have many of the stereotypical social issues tho.

I'd always known I was different, and then I randomly decided to read Asperger's Syndrome by Tony Attwood and found that the people described in that book were eerily similar to myself.

I can very well identify with the traits of Asperger's Syndrome, as well as those of ADHD, NLD and hyperlexia. I have not had an official diagnosis, nor have I told my parents about my suspicions.

(Well, my mom told me once that she thought that I was autistic, but that is the closest I have come to a diagnosis. )

I brought up my concerns with my doctor, he referred me to a therapist, who, after some length of time, diagnosed me with Asperger's.
