Asperger is such a hype nowadays, everyone f*cking think they have AS while in reality at most 2 out of 1000 ppl have AS, probably a lot less. AS is a serious condition and if everyone just diagnoses themselves AS won't be taken seriously anymore by the community because everybody has it, Just don't say you have AS until you are 100% sure of it,

I disagree. Certain 'professionals' can misdiagnose and often have in their mind their own version of AS, i.e "you can't have AS because you are missing this 1 trait." I have been told that a lot of times. I was diagnosed with severe depression, when my mother and I (with no medical training) knew that this was impossible. And later I self diagnosed myself with PMDD and demanded my doctor put me on medication after I almost took my own life. So yes, self diagnosis can help. I've not even been officially diagnosed with PMDD but when that time comes around and I get angry and upset easily, and often doubting myself that I know that I have it.
I self diagnosed myself with dysmenorrhea and the doctor put me down as suffering menorrhea (which may be similar but the symptoms are a bit different). Fact is there are very careless doctors out there who think they are right and you don't know a darn thing, but I know my body and mind more than they do.

I think no one knows you more than yourself, so if you do the research, that is reading a book on autism rather than finding 3 websites, then you should get an idea if you have it or not. Right now I'm reading a book on ADHD and talking to people with it to come to a conclusion that I have it.

now we are disqualifying people who didn't get a 2nd opinion? LOL>

I was on a political website where people used to go on and on about the public perception this and that and the other and the truth is the 'public' are thinking about a cheeseburger or porn or their underwear crawling up their crack...they don't care, it's just people being a bit particular about their status that worry about it.

Lol yes. What's it gonna be next? Maybe you only have it if you got 3 different diagnoses that concur? :D

First, your figures are off - given recent rates, the number of people on the spectrum per thousand is going to be around ten, or five times the number you provide. Secondly, not everyone is going to meet your standards of diagnosis, nor are they required to in order to be a member on WP. Please be respectful of your fellow members.

Well, if you want to say Asperger's specifically, the rate is actually lower than that, like 1 in 1000. But the rate of classic autism is something like 3 in 1000, and PDD-NOS about 6 in 1000. Total, about 1 in 100, give or take fifty thanks to there being no really good way of tallying all those autism spectrum people.

Funny. I took the online tests, did scads of research, then presented what I had found to my doctor. He confirmed my self-diagnosis was more than likely correct. So... I didn't have it, until the doctor confirmed it?

Hahaha. That's like saying... because my driver's license (or ID) is expired I'm not 28 years old.

One time I posted an aspie test result on my facebook, and somebody I knew told me she was offended because her sister is an aspie. But I was the one who should be offended, because I would think somebody who has experience with an aspie should be expected to know that other aspies aren't exactly the same. But that person isn't very bright anyway, and has serious emotional problems herself. But it's still offensive, and it shows us that somebody who has a small amount of knowledge on a topic actually knows less than somebody who knows nothing, because one who knows a little about a topic is prone to making assumptions.

Anyway, the original post in this thread is irrelevant.

What I find interesting is that it seems to me both sides of the issue are driven by a need for certainty. Those who self-diagnose have often been seeking answers for a long time, and in many cases are older individuals for whom there was no explanation or understanding through-out their lives. The diagnosis of an ASD gives a security and identity to those who have been missing these elements for a lifetime. For those who are officially diagnosed, much of their issue seems to be regarding the 'dilution' of their diagnosis by others saying they have the same condition. If the others are significantly different, then they certainly can't have the condition - this despite the fact that they meet the criteria in the different fashion. The similarity alone is remarkably telling in some cases.

I don't know why people are against the self diagnosed but in my experiance I knew someone who decided he had AS too and he started to act like it and he got worse and worse. Then I hated the self diagnosed after that and used to tell people "go get a diagnoses." But I got over that. Okay so I had a bad experiance. It wouldn't be fair if I thought that of all the self diagnoses. Perhaps all these people who are against the self diagnosed had a bad experiance with one of them?

I have heard stories about people going online and they come across AS and read a short discription of it and go "Oh that's me" and they don't look deep into it or re search it. They just slap a label on themselves and they have no idea what it is. I have also heard some act worse and worse. Maybe those stories come from experiance. I've never seen any normal teen going on the computer and deciding they have AS just because they are depressed or they have outside interests and they don't fit in with their peers and they have no other signs of having AS. I've never even heard of this in real life either. Only online. TBH if I have never been diagnosed and I came across AS in my teens, I wouldn't even be sure I have it. I would think "oh that sounds like me" and then be freaked out by it because great another thing wrong with me and then not think about it and move on. I wouldn't even think to have it. I might not look deep into it either. If I did, I might still be "Not sure if I have it or not." I probably wouldn't even be here either if I weren't diagnosed.

I see on Yahoo Answers sometimes people asking if they are autistic just because they are shy or a little awkward in social situations and they don't even list their other autism symptoms such as sensory issues, the inflexibility, the inability to read people, difficulty with understanding feelings, difficulty with change, their motor mannerisms, taking things literal. Only thing they list is they don't do well with talking to people or approaching them, they are shy, and my god "I am into computers, do I have AS?" "I don't ever feel like talking when I am in the car? Am I autistic?"

But sometimes I will come across YA questions by users asking if they have it and they list their symptoms and it's obvious they probably do have it just by what they listed. They didn't just list the social problems. So I'll take them seriously, but the rest I give smart ass answers.

I notice these days people assume whenever they see an aspie online, he or she must be self diagnosed and those who are self diagnosed, they must not have it because they aren't diagnosed.

I'm going to quote what the aspie said; "True aspergers is rare, true aspies have an aversion towards NT's, only fake and misdiagnosed aspies accept NT's completely."

That's what true aspergers is.

Woohooo I'm misdiagnosed. Yeahhhhhhh. Now I am out of here. Good bye WP. I'm cured. I don't need this place. I was on the wrong planet for all these years. Now I need to get on the right planet. Bye bye.

Your friend is nuts.

So if you had a severity of symptoms, that stopped you from getting the most out of life (work, friends, independence, relationships) but you still liked NT's you do not have true AS? I find that hard to believe.

Misdiagnosed aspies can be anything, mentally unstable, depressive and anxious NT's, fake aspies too, true aspies don't thrive in a high position in society, they don't want to become spokespersons, teachers, chairmen, artists or managers, if you're a fake aspie, you have no problems with travelling to a country on your own, you have no problems with arranging meetings in a company, you can smalltalk since the age of 13, you can make and raise a child and move in in an apartment without being noticed.
