I was thinking more of the capital of that non-country, Brussels. Easy to get to for anyone. Oh, and the beer is much cheaper in Brussels than Amsterdam with more choice. ;)

It would be easy for me to fly into and fly out of again, too.

Main drawback that I can see is that reliably quiet and clean hotels in Brussels ( for those needing one! ) are either very expensive or far out from the centre so would have to pay for buses/trams in and out ( and using them late in the evenings might not be much fun ). The cheapest, ( simple clean chain hotels ) on the periphery, seem to be around 45€ minimum, but in town prices start at 55€/60€/night per single room and that for places I wouldn't feel v confident about staying in. Maybe someone could recommend a good one? :)

It's true that it would probably be a lot more convenient and cheaper for many people to get to than Avignon was, so that might balance out. :) ... ( And we could always go to Bruges by train for an afternoon! ) ...

I probably wouldn't want to go before next Spring though, because I'm broke right now, ( and the train from here in southern France isn't cheap ) and because it'll probably be cold, brrr, and grey and wet ... not that's there's any guarantee that it'll be nice in April/May ... it did rain all of the Sunday morning in Avignon at the end of May ... .

On the other hand some flights to southern Spain, Andalucia, in the early or late Spring, before or after Easter, before the summer rush, are as cheap if not cheaper than flights to Brussels ... and there are many more much cheaper hotels ... and the most beautiful gorgeous buildings and scenery and sunlight and it is sooooo different! :lol Smile ... Half, alright, 25%-33% of, the charm of Avignon was the "difference" and the sunshine! :D

... If choosing Brussels meant that a meet-up happened again I might be quite interested, but I have to say that Brussels is not exactly somewhere I long to be. :lol :? Amsterdam though! It's 14 plus years since I last visited it. :)

The netherlands seems like a good idea, i could travel there if it were a school holidays .... and leave the kids at my husband's parents' place :p
Edit: since you prefer to wait for spring, can it wait until july? Much warmer (although i'd still need a coat, holland brrrr) and...no school? I'm being a pain aren't I....

The parts of Andalucia that I saw were mainly total dumps. I think if you go away from the Costa del Sol and stick to the interior, it's probably not as bad. As for the Costa del Sol, I bloody hate the place and wouldn't want to go back there. I've already been to Gibraltar twice so I don't really want to go back there either.

How about Malta?

I wouldn't mind meeting in the European part of the Netherlands or Belgium - either sounds good to me.

July is already peak holiday season and much more expensive, and crowded too. What about the half-term holiday and/or long bank holiday weekends in May/June?

I agree about a lot of the coast. For me Andalucia *is* inland :lol :Granada, ( with the Alhambra ), Cordoba, ( the cathedral inside a mosque ), Sevilla or Ronda/the White Towns. :)

What do you mean by the "European part"? :?

Brussels would definitely be easy, fast and relatively cheap for me to get to, and I'd have free accommodation so it wouldn't be all that hard for me to do ( from here in France ) ... but I can imagine it being difficult for people to find cheap hotels ... and it's not quite such an exciting/attractive destination as Avignon was, so may not seem worth the time or money when London would probably be about as interesting, and so much cheaper and easier for most people in the UK! :)

But it's true that most people seemed to be frightened off/totally alienated by suggestions of more distant adventurous destinations, like Morocco ...

And for some people the destination wasn't actually all that important so long as it was a met-up with WP'ers "abroad"! Looking back at the Avignon meet-up, how it happened, etc it does seem as KenG says, surreal, because it didn't seem to have much to do with any sensible logical factors, was more like a strange and happy accident! :D

That's pretty much all I saw of Andalucia. And, of course, a tiny bit of Huelva and Ayamonte. Never got the chance to see Seville or any of the other places you mention apart from a very brief drive through Ronda I think.

The Netherlands is mainly concentrated on the European mainland; however, several islands in the Caribbean also form an integral part of the country.

I think I could do a four-day break in Brussels for two people for just under £390 (€450). As you point out, the main problem is the hotel prices as flights are very cheap from Liverpool.

Mind you, I looked up hotels in Bruges and they look even more expensive than the ones in Brussels!

Whereabouts are you from in France?

Most hotels start from £60 (€69) per night in Brussels. Expensive.

Don't count on that - for many people it's actually easier - and cheaper (more exciting) to go abroad than it is to go to London. I'd rather go to Brussels than go to London, put it that way.

Morocco sounds grim. What about somewhere on the European mainland? What about Malta, Italy or Greece?

What's so bad about London? I mean really? I think some parts of it have a great atmosphere, and are pretty.

Anyway, is anything gonna be organised?

Gives an advantage to some members over others. How'd you like it if I suggested a meet in Preston?

Oh come on - Preston's a dump. London is only a dump in some areas.

I'd rather be in a dump in Preston (even the Pakistani areas like Fishwick or the neighbouring, rougher, Callon estate) than in South London where I could get murdered for going into the wrong housing estate.

It's not like I'd organise a meetup in a crap part of London though, would I? Or anyone else.
