I'm 30 and I still dont have one. I got a learning permit a few years ago, but I only drove twice before it expired. I just cant imagine how hard it would be to deal with the paperwork and people involved in getting a licence. If I got in an accident, I would have to deal with someone yelling at me too.

I'm 23 and still don't have a driver's license... though I'm on, I think, my fourth learner's permit.

Simply put, I'm afraid to get behind the wheel of a car on my own, because I have this tendency to get visually overloaded and have trouble making sense of what exactly I'm looking at. This is, of course, not a good thing to have happen, when the thing I'm trying to make sense of is something like a stop sign or another car.

That, and my spatial perception still needs a lot of work. I've had a few close calls where, had it not been for a passenger with good reflexes, I would've crashed into another car because I misjudged where it was in relation to me.

Plus, parallel parking is a requirement for the Georgia driver's test, and I still haven't the vaguest idea how to tell when to turn and when to turn back. It all depends on knowing when things are lined up with parts of the car that I can't see at all!

If things keep going the way they are, and there's no sort of therapy that can help with this... I probably won't ever have a license.

UK is 17 or over that but under 18....I think.

Hi, here (mexico) you can drive as soon as you're 15-16 with a permission/permit, and the test must be done using a car with manual transmision.

Exactly like me!
I also wasn't interested in learning to drive, but as soon as I had my license something hit me: I was so happy to be able to go anywhere I liked!

I still suck at parking, but you know what? I don't care anymore, I just laught at it and move on with my life :)

Damn, now that I have a car I'm thinking on going to the beach or visiting my grandmother (about 4 hours from here), but I've never drove the highway, anyone here has?

has anyone tried going to paid driver's ed?

that's what did it for me, when at age 21 i finally got the nerve to learn but failed the road test 2 times (that's more than it took my friends with cerebral palsy!), once by pulling out in front of an oncoming car, which thankfully was a little bit far away... and finally i had to go pay a guy at a driving school and i think i paid about $60 total (this is over 10 yrs ago) and he told me all the secrets (like slow down to 15mph for a right turn, or something like that), and finally i passed the thing. i wasn't comfortable driving until ... wow ... like, maybe a few years ago.

i still hate driving in biggish cities and freak out sometimes (@#$%^&*! !! I hate [name of city]! !! + tears if some extreme traffic thing has happened) which i thought was called "road-rage" but from what i read above, i guess it's called "meltdown". Plus i don't shoot anybody.

i drive either extra-cautious or absent-minded... bad combination. 8O but so far I have had no accidents except hitting posts (while parking) and curbs occasionally ... well, more than most people. i think it's a depth-perception thing for the curbs, at least.

and sometimes while driving calmly along the interstate i suddenly remember that i am in control of a moving vehicle that weighs whatevernumberof tons, and that if i lost control of it any number of accidents could be caused and it freaks me out. so i stop thinking about that in order to keep driving.

i remember being horrified that we had to remember to use the directional signals before turning. i truly thought they operated by reading the driver's intention, and i wondered how the car was able to do that.

Yep. And I was totally oblivious to things even then... there were a few times when the only reason I noticed a stop sign was because the instructor was putting on her brake. This didn't increase my confidence any, needless to say!

(How do people clearly, instantly see particular objects in all that visual clutter?!)

And I still had a hard time judging what speed to make turns, and other little things like that, because even the paid instructor didn't really explain those things clearly... they did teach a method of parallel parking that worked for me, which I should've brought a pen and paper to write down, because I forgot it shortly thereafter. Stupid short-term memory problems. ::sigh::

I don't even have a drivers liscense and I'm almost 20. I failed the driving test and never took it again. I don't why though but I didn't take it again.

I don't really want to get a liscense. Aproaching 17, and still haven't gone for my permit. I have really bad ADHD, so I will probably be really bad on the road.

I don't really need a liscense, anyway. I can easily run anywhere within 10 miles of my house. I can move close to my work when I get older, or take the bus/train. and if I really need a car, well... I'll just get by with a little help from a friend.

I still need my permit. I failed the permit test twice and since I now have a job I haven't had time to study for it or take it.

here in Lebanon the minimum age is 18 , I got my driver licence at age 19 in the first time , I drived my dad's car a bit for months then later i didn't really drive till age 24 becoz i don't have a car yet . The true reason not getting car is not only financial but in fact I don't really like driving , people in my country drive like nuts , few repsect the driving rules and the police are weak and poorly equiped , sometimes u suddenly passed by a crazy at speed 200/h ....sometimes in the small streets u find a car coming in the wrong way toward u ...URRR

I want to take driver's ed., but I haven't been able to yet. I'm in 11th grade (very close to 12th), and I've been asking my mom for awhile to take driver's ed., but more so for the last few months. Anyways, I want to get my driver's license, yet I don't want to get a car until I get out of college because it's too expensive to own a car for me at the moment while trying to pay for college. I am a little scared to drive, but I think it would be fun, and a friend of mine says that it makes you feel as if you have another deeper sense of freedom.

It’s nice to know that I am not the only one that waited to get my license. I took drivers training when I was 16 in school but I would never practice driving. I did not really want to drive because when, just after I got my first permit at 16 one of my best friends in died in a car wreak :( . I never had many friends so after that happened I would get in a panic every time I would get behind the wheel.

Finally at 20 I had to get it because I moved to an area with extremely poor public transportation and the fact that you might have to walk 2 or 4 miles to the nearest bus stop in 115 degree heat. Now I love driving especially on the freeway but the one thing is I can’t listen to any fast music I tend to speed really fast  .

My best advice for people having trouble 99% of driving is practice it takes years to get good at it.

I got my drivers license when I turned 16. Had one really good wreck a couple months later and then I was a good driver after that. Other than that, I never had any problems.

People tell me I "drive like a cop" when they ride with me. I'm not really sure what they mean. :?

I'm just starting to learn, and I'm up for drivers' ed next week. Till then, my mother's been teaching me in an attempt to get me acclimatized to driving.

I am absolutely terrified. It isn't so bad when we're driving around the park, because there's almost no cars there and I can go as slow as I like, but at the end she always makes me go on a main road with some lower traffic and I panic, especially when it gets a little narrow and I can't keep the middle line in the corner of the windshield, which is a trick I've been using to cope and to help me keep myself aligned. Stop lights are awful and I always forget to signal my turns, and I CAN'T process everything and remember to do everything and I'm always getting nervous and panicky, which makes it worse.

Hopefully it'll get better with practice. When we first started driving, it was really awful, because I'm extremely photosensitive and I kept having to close my eyes because it was too bright outside. Not the best thing to do in a moving car! Thankfully, my mother agreed to buy me prescription sunglasses so that's less of a problem now.

Glad to know I'm not the only one having trouble!

Got mine when I was 16. Passed on first try. But I don't have my own car and I have a problem with driving anywhere that I am not familiar with by heart unless somebody is riding shotgun with me. So far I've only driven my parents car for the purpose of getting to and from school. Thats about it. And I haven't driven at all since June 22nd 2004.
