One of the very first things I ever blocked was "intellitxt.com" and it didn't have any impact until today. It's completely blocked whether I report myself as IE or FF.

This is definitely a server issue. The server isn't even correctly responding to the browser's requests.

Yeah i don't know wtf is going on. It seems like its a server issue that I can't fix, but the fact that the rest of the site works is what makes me really confused.

Have you ever looked at your server stats to find out what percentage of users are avoiding IE? (Of course some error will creep in due to things like the UserAgent switcher.) I think the day is rapidly approaching when "optimized for IE" will be seen as a serious flaw in a website.

The problem was related to the fact that I decided to enable gzip compression in the forum software even though the server doesn't have gzip support compiled in (doh moment). Internet explorer deals with gzip in a different way than all the other browsers so the software just doesn't gzip if its IE. Once i told the forum not to try to use gzip, everything went back to normal.

WrongPlanet is not optimized for IE actually. I don't even have a copy of IE on this machine since I don't run windows. A large percentage of WrongPlanet users are not accessing the site via IE anyway.

I've made it so the ads won't start loading until *after* the page is finished loading.

You're probably noticing that the site is loading a lot more quickly because of this. If anyone does notice an increase in speed, please let me know. If you don't notice anything, let me know too. This is currently experimental.

Well there ya go Alex! You have an admirer. I don't recall anybody complaining when I pulled my mug off my avatar. There's nothing wrong with your new one of course; it just appears that you're taking this whole advertising thing just a tad too seriously, that's all.

Having said that...what am I bid for my av space?

I wouldn't have a problem contributing if I had money to do it. Hope I can someday. I like the idea of text only advertising. I get a little distracted by flashing/moving ads but figure it comes with the territory. Glad you don't have the one that screams hello though. My husband is hearing impaired and leaves the sound turned up and some with sound just blast my head off. Maybe the thing to do is for any computer users who don't like certain ads to contact the advertisers and tell them the ad in question bothers them, and would they consider changing it, as it is a turn-off with their product. Maybe if they get enough response they will listen. Or maybe not. Just a thought. I must admit it's a little hard to focus at first when it is raining ipods down the side of the screen and it doesn't make me want to go buy one.

No, not really. Gzip doesn't have anything to do with writing html that complies with W3C. Plus, most browsers don't implement everything in the specs.

The flashing ones hurt my head. I don't mind ones that stay still and quiet, but if they flash or make noise, I can't handle it.

Do note that I haven't made a dime off this site, I don't run it anymore, it's Alex's now. My 'Administrator' thing is more honorary, I'm like the Queen of England.

Also, every time I speak to Alex, I make sure to fuss and moan as much as possible about the ads (and whine extra-nausiatingly about the ones disguised to look like part of the site).

Does anyone else get creeped out by the little toenail fungus monster ad?

I find myself thoroughly disturbed by the DadaMobile banner ad.

The words "George Michael" and "under arrest" come immediately to mind, every time.

I have no problem with the idea of ads.

I don't mind the Google text ads at all. They're understated, and they might even on occasion be advertising something I'm actually interested in, unlike nearly all of the graphical ads on the site (submit your personal information for us to spam you so you have a one in a zillion chance of winning a PSP!).

However, I agree with the comments that any ad with audio or rapid animation should be struck from the site completely; those sorts of ads are the bane of many autistics, which is one of the reasons people are blocking them in the first place.
