Popular Hobbies and addictions
Same. It goes along with my whole medical interests. And can be kind of awkward.
But yes. Love everything to do with medicine.
My obsession is movies and tv. My imdb vote history is like my 29-piece drum kit. I wonder if anyone gets that reference.
My other hobby is bobblehead collecting. Strictly movies, tv, etc. I've never been interested in sports. I've gotten a few sports ones for gifts but I don't really consider them part of my collection. Doesn't mean I don't like them...well, I guess it sort of does. I have about 60 of them.
Currently, its pipe-smoking. I have 12 pipes and about 20 kinds of tobacco. I'm always looking for more. I have to try each tobacco in each pipe and figure out how to pack it correctly and smoke it correctly for each pipe to get the best smoke from each tobacco. There's a ritual for packing, for smoking, and for cleaning afterwards. Oh yeah, and all the tools and paraphenalia that go with that. Lots of weekends spent at flea markets and swap meets looking for antique pipes and tools...
I also build audio amplifiers, repair old tube radios, restore old sewing machines, build furniture, collect military surplus & camping gear (for backpacking & camping), gold prospecting, fishing (lots of fishing poles, tackle-boxes, parts, thingies), develop data encryption techniques, and build complex routed networks for VoIP traffic.
In the past, I have collected guns & knives, collected old computers (mainframes), repaired old video games, restored old cars, built monster trucks, drank and collected liquor along with collecting all of the associated paraphenalia, built a still in my kitchen to make rum, um, there's probably only a dozen or so more I've forgotten.
The joy is in getting the tools and learning how to use them, which is good for many hours of completely absorbed obsession, ultimately resulting in the satisfaction of a job well done. And for the most part, these don't have to involve other people.
