I live within walking distance of an In & Out. I rarely eat there, though. It's good, but expensive for what you get.

I've taken that drive, too. With a Clydesdale in tow. lol

An advanced "Welcome to California" to you :) I think this will be a good venture for you, especially in dealing with the filming industry.

Me too - minus the Clydesdale. If you sleep outside at a Nevada rest stop, check under your sleeping bag in the morning for squashed scorpions... :)

You can find this in California, too.

Yes, tons of scorpions here, but very few dangerous ones.

Also, if you're walking down the street in certain neighborhoods and a car stops and asks you "where you're from" the answer is "nowhere".

In Southern Arizona, if someone flashes their headlights at you, you don't flash them back.

Cool. We do plan on driving through Amarillo.

I have eaten at In and Out before and I really enjoyed it.

Good luck! Hope you make a documentary about the trip- it'd be cool to see all the WPers you meet along the way!

Flagstaff is gorgeous! I stayed there during my cross country trip. Reminds me of home :) It's nice to get out of the heat at a higher elevation, for a change, too.

Hi Alex,

I'm originally from No Ho (North Hollywood to outsiders). Still live in So Cal, but away from LA. I'm not fond of traffic & all the craziness. Unlike what someone else said, not everyone in California is here because they're in the entertainment industry. I was born here, raised here, but some day I'd love to live in a quieter place with less traffic, less noise, & fewer people. My job has nothing to do with Hollywood, btw. I like it like that... However, everything in & around So Cal is geared around the entertainment industry including every news station. :-( It's wearing thin for me as there are lots of things happening not only around the country but the world as well, & people like Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Lohan, & Mel Gibson seem to pre-empt all those other reports.

Hope you enjoy your stay here....as others said, stay clear of any freeway during rush hour (the 405, 101, I-5, & 91 are all notoriously messed up), & don't venture into sketchy neighborhoods. There's a ton of stuff to do here year round. Plenty of touristy type stuff, but also some beautiful scenery as well. Oh yeah avoid driving back from Las Vegas anytime on Sunday afternoons or evenings, or on holidays. Getting there isn't a problem, but the return trip is one huge nightmare that can literally steal 9 hours out of a day's travel.

I sometimes eat at In 'N Out too. We have one within walking distance of home. However I despise thousand island dressing on anything, so I order animal style without the spread (their term for the dressing). :-) Another good burger place is Islands or the Habit. If you like food, So Cal has many options.

Best of luck!

Tomboy

PS: One more thing, if you don't know Spanish, you'll need to learn. Lots of Spanish names here...both cities, streets, etc.

I notice how people keep mentioning In-And-Out. I'm actually a bigger fan of Jack in the Box.

Come to think of it, isn't that also a CA-only place? I don't know of one in Dallas, nor any along the way from LA to TX, which I drive a lot.

I don't care for Jack in the Box myself, as it's too oily/everything deepfried. A bodybuilder's enemy! But when I was little, I'd beg to go to the Jack-In-The-Box drive-thru, as I was fascinated by the two-way speaker hidden inside the clown. For those younger than I, there was no such thing as a drive-up window at McDonalds or any other fast-food place yet. Jack-In-The-Box was the only one, other than full-service drive-ins like Bob's Big Boy where you'd go park, and the wait staff came out to the car. JIB had no dining room either... Just a drive-up and an outdoor walk-up window.

Now it's illegal in many places in California to build a new drive-up window (pollution from idling vehicles?), so I would bet sooner or later, they'll force the existing ones to convert to walk-up or park & order only.

Charles

Jack In The Box is pretty good, but you have to be in the mood for greasy or order smart.
