"Asperger's." I say AS instead.

"Rural" is awful, too.

I also tend to say "film" instead of "movie," which makes me worry that people will think I'm a snobby cinema geek.

I agree with pritty much all the words in the first couple of posts.

My biggest pet-peeve though is "splurge".

God I hate that word. It's physically painful.

I like most of the suggestions.

Has anybody ever noticed how good most very rude words are? I mean, it's like, the "better" a word is (in terms of the sequence of the syllables and such) the less it is used or the ruder it is. There are exceptions- as a user noted, "p****" is a pretty awful word, though I don't mind it when used to describe a cat- but generally, obscure and rude words are better than polite, common words.

I don't mean they show you have a better vocabulary, or they give me a thrill when I use them, but they're just better words. Like "discombobulated".

Lol, I agree. Some of the most fun words are either ignored or taboo.

I hate the word "crepuscular". It just sounds gross, and reminds me of rotten cucumbers.

It sounds like a person with a big butt taking a huge crap the size of a log.

i'm really picky with what words i like or dislike so here's a short list.

Autism (eew, consonant clusters)
Squeegee (i hate using 2 'e's to represent /i/. and q is just a pointless letter. same with 'c' and 'x')
Also squat.
most words ending in -ng, -st, -r and -mp.
4+ consonants in a row are just awful, unless not every letter makes a distinct sound.
also "inappropriate"

Kostrzyn is my favorite word. it seems so fantasy-like, like it would be a fairies name. lots of Polish words have that quality.
"elat", "elon", "etat", "cworannaie" and "etattalorel" are lovely.

How about repulsive sound and meaning. One comes to mind and has to be just about the worst in the English language.

Smegma

Why do I get the feeling this post will be a thread killer? :o

^i hate smegma too. s and m don't really fit well together in my eyes.
most medicine-related words just seem really off putting. "uveitis" not being the least of them.

How come you revived this old thread?

Any way, I agree with you about 'district'. I think it sounds 'distressing' and 'strict' with too many consonants although it means something totally different.

Also, the word 'hug' always reminds me of a hag (I'm an ESL person and to me they sound similar).

The word 'asphalt' sounds quite repulsive, too. It's like a mixture of a vulgar word and a negative word.

Tummy
Belly
When people say the word "poot" to describe the sound
Also adverse to the word "pregnant" and all the forms it comes in, ever since my partner and I started discussing kids

I also really detest the sound of Mandarin and speaking Mandarin which has led me to refuse to speak it all my life. A bit of a problem when your family is Chinese and mandarin is an official language here. I also don't like people calling me by my Chinese name or using it or saying it. Again, causes problems everywhere because its on my ID and passport.

I don't know, hearing or saying these words or language, makes me feel awkward and awful all over.

The way you say it sounds like a brand of cookware: Cephalon.
