analog tv sets of the CRT variety [cathode ray tube, that big bulky honkin' heavy thing of olde], of the NTSC [american] variety, emitted a horizontal scan whistle of 15,754 cycles per second, roughly a very VERY high G or so] which for those who still had most of their treble hearing acuity, was a penetrating dog-whistle-like tone that seemed to drill through one's skull. this tone could be heard whenever the set was on.

As Fnord said human hearing is supposed to range from 20 vibrations a second, to 20 thousand a second. Humans are just flat out NOT supposed to be able to hear into the 23 to 50 range that dog whistles do, and that dogs can hear. A professor in a college course I took played a series of electronic tones (starting from 20 k and then progressively going down). I couldnt hear anything until he got down to maybe 16 thousand (some embarrassingly low number, but I was older than most of the class), but even most of the youngsters couldnt hear any tone below like 17 or 18k. Its too bad that these folks testing you didnt document what the frequencies were that you could hear. And you claim that you can hear bats too? Thats also not supposed to be possible for humans. Maybe you're a freak of nature. But it would be kinda cool if you someone could just test you (not for health or for hiring, but just to investigate) to see if you can indeed hear into these higher ranges. Playing you electronic tones would be good because you wouldnt get fooled by other sounds like air rushing through a whistle.

russian experiments in the last century showed that a few individuals could hear ultrasonic frequencies [up to 100k cycles per second] if the transducer was pressed against the skull near the ear. interestingly, they said asthmatic children were the majority of these people. my own hearing, as a child, was [at least until my dad partially deafened me as a child by firing a 30:06 rifle a few feet from my ears, leaving ringing which rings even today] acute. i could hear insects walking - "tapapapapapapapapapapa...." each "tapa" or foot step was accompanied by a "sticky" sound.

Could it be that when my eardrum went as a child, and then it healed, it gave me the ability to hear the high pitched range?

I could hear some TV's but florescent lights... More of a problem as they are loud, especially when one walks into a shop full of them! School had this problem. The noise of the lights... I have had a thought. It could be that I was not so much light sensitive to them, but sound sensitive to the things?

I know I cannot hear doggy whistles because it is beyond the normal hearing range. However I can hear boxed TV sets TVs and I used to hear them all the time and I was shocked that lot of people couldn't hear them, I hear the sound I hear is at the edge of the normal hearing range so that would explain why half of the population can't seem to hear it.

I can hear our flat big screen TV in our living room but the sound isn't as loud and it turns itself off when there is no activity.

Political dog whistles are just sentences and phrases politicians use that target a certain group of people and the majority won't notice it because it won't affect them.

Someone mentioned about bats, my husband says he can hear them. Am I going to hear next how humans aren't supposed to hear fluorescent lights? I also recall reading somewhere that infants can hear bats too because they have higher frequency hearing range. That is why teens can hear the mosquito tone and adults can't because as we get older, our hearing range drops so we hear less sound frequencies. But people on the spectrum are known for having better hearing so they may hear sounds most people will not notice like they may hear conversations across the room, may hear other things most people wouldn't be able to hear.

What do you mean by saying you "can hear TV sets"?

Obviously you dont mean hearing the programming coming through the set. So WTF are you talking about? Do you mean you hear a hum or something, even when you mute the set, or turn it off?

I mean on mute or with volume all the way down. I am not sure how to describe the sound. It's a tiny little high pitch sound and some were louder than others and it would be annoying unless there was volume on to tune it out.

forgot about the fluorescent lights with the ballasts. i have one but thankfully it is so far a silent thing, or at least silent to me. but the CFL in my bedroom makes a little hiss that can be heard in the room. LG, this might be what you are hearing in your TV set as the older ones use fluorescent lights to backlight them.

John Duffie reported that as he got older, he thought he was seeing Robins yawning, and violinists lifting their bows slightly while still sawing away, whenever their left hand moved up to the higher notes. It took a while to realize that his wife had not said "That was a nice leather banana" but "That was a nice letter from Anna."

It's not really me, haha  It's a character from a horror movie. The character has my first name. It looks cool, so I used it as my avatar.

Aspie is your first name? Nice.

No! It's not. I know you're kidding :D If you can figure out the title of the movie this character is from, you will know my first name. Her name is the title :)

I'm familiar with that TV sound, usually from when the TV was on a dead input. My parents wondered why I'd 'at random' storm into the living room to turn the TV off, but I could hear it from my room. It gets drowned out easily but when the house was quiet it was easy to notice and then not be able to unnotice.

The TV set my grandparents has was so loud (it was a 90's TV set) I could hear it all the way down the hallway. No one could hear it and I remember when they had on that football game, they had it on mute so they could all talk while the game is on in the background and I could hear that sound. None of them could hear. Yes I could it through the talking.

My cousin was the only one who knew what I was talking about and said she has heard them sometimes. But that time she couldn't hear it. It was very annoying. They wanted it on but didn't want the sound on and they didn't know what noise I was talking about.

I dont know how to link to it but Wikipedea has an article entitled "audio frequencies" which has samples of tones of each of the 12 octaves up to 16 thousand. You can click play on each to see if you can hear them.

The article says that the 16 thousand tone is what "most TV sets run at".

Humans are supposed to be able to hear up to 20thousand. I cant hear the16 thousand tone, and...I cant even hear the 8000 frequency tone! 8O  .So my hearing must be really impaired!
