I get along really well with all animals - cats, horses, dogs, you name it. I worked at a riding school for awhile - mucking stalls and all that - and I was very, very good with the horses, even the really wild ones.
Sometimes I think I use animals as a way to avoid people too, like if I'm visiting somewhere and they have a dog, I'll spend all my time with the dog instead of the people. Sometimes I think I express affection for people through their animals. Sometimes animals can also help me to interact with people though, for instance, when I go to my sister's, and I can entertain my nieces there all day long and have a really great time - they have a dog named Oscar and all of us head down to the water and spend hours goofing around, swimming, playing with a ball and so on. Without Oscar around, of if we're indoors, the kids make me really uncomfortable and I just don't visit in the winter or if it's raining.
I have two cats ... they are magnetized to me all the time, follow me around everywhere. I even taught one of them to fetch!
