The picture of the woman staring at the camera posted earlier... It really caught me off guard when I first brought the image up. I can look at it but after a while it feels uncomfortable and I have to close or minimize the tab. But if I start analysing the features of her face, I can look for a longer time.
I don't like pictures of people staring at the camera, nor do I like being stared at in a video, either. To me, continual eye contact in general (whether photo, video, or real life) is intimidating and uncomfortable, especially if the eyes are widened. I hate most celebrity photos for this fact; they smile with the whites of their eyes around the iris showing. To me, showing teeth and widened eyes (especially doubled with direct eye contact with this expression) is a sign of fear or aggression, or both. I find it near impossible to see it any other way.
