Hey y'all, I found the perfect solution for the noisiness of the bus which I too hate! Hearing protectors!

Here's a better solution: Wax earplugs. They're mold-able, reusable, block out a lot of unwanted noise, and are totally inconspicuous.

Not that I have a problem with loud noises; I'm just pointing out a less ridiculous alternative.

But hearing protectors let you use earphones at the same time and they look just like the cup-style earphones other people use (Except possibly a little jumbo sized and the more attentive observer would notice the wire enters both sides and not directly into the earphone.), so no fear of being RIDICULed because it is RIDICULous. But, if you have no desire to listen to music or laptop sounds, wax earplugs are great.

Anyway, those hearing protectors or earplugs are a lifesaver when someone's screaming baby gets on the bus.

Personally, on the bus, I'm don't mind looking crazy if it helps ensure a seat all to myself.

Hearing protectors or earplugs--good idea. I could have used something like that last week when a loudly whining child (about 5 years old) and a woman constantly popping her gum got on not only the first bus I take to get home, but also transferred to the second bus I need. Thankfully, they got off one stop after the transfer station.

For the most part, taking the bus is okay, but that day....I think you can imagine what I wanted to do with that gum.

I seem to remember having some kind of a phobia about taking buses (there were no passenger trains where I grew up). I overcame that phobia by the time I was 10 or 12, but other kids used to take the bus to places alone as early as 7 or 8 at that time. I did once get on a wrong bus, and only had enough money for one fare, so I got nervous and explained the whole thing to the bus driver at the end of the line, after the other people had all gotten off. Luckily, he believed me, and he gave me a free ride and a transfer back to the correct stop. However, that was after I had overcome the fear of phobia, and it didn't seem to make the phobia return.

I just use in-ear monitor type ear buds, and crank the volume up. Music fuels my imagination for my stories during the long, boring ride, and keeps me from dwelling on the occasional annoying-as-fuck person who doesn't know how to talk quietly on the phone or keep their children under control. Of course, because my boss lets me listen to music on the job, as long as I keep one ear open in case I'm paged, I find it really weird to listen to music through both ears when using ear buds; I've become so accustomed to listening through only one. So, I only listen through one, anyway, no matter where I am.
