How did surfman come to this conclusion.

Forever in debt to your priceless advice
My littlebrother hit his head into a door when he was angry, but that was when he was 2 and he dosen't have AS only ADHD and Tourette.
um... have you watched all the videos? I'm pretty sure he's LF, and I don't need a doctors degree to work that out. That's very interesting about your little brother though because I have ADHD/Tourettes (and Aspergers... *sigh* what a mix) and I head bang when I am angry. Straight into the door like you said. I wonder if it is a Tourettes thing

he has some insight into the kid's theory of mind since he's felt some of it himself. not completely; he's making an educated guess. and i agree with him, i'd give it an 80% chance of being a big influencer into the kids behavior.

Sad as it is, I have to agree. Kid is probably pent up.
It looks like something else is going on to me too though. Everyone is different, but it doesn't strike me that his Autism alone is causing his issues.
yep. seen that video too.

That guy isn't low-end, I knew a 100% autist who maybe could do stuff like that.

She is just undiagnosing everyone who is 'high functioning' and seems to be mainly focussing on girls who, as we all well know, don't always present in the same way as boys.
Aaaand off she goes again:

i think she's right to be skeptical. there is a lot of fraud and stupidity in the autism space. she's probably been taken advantage of already.
also i suspect her life is worse than most of ours. her kid is pretty low functioning and she's spending a lot of time dealing with that. she's also likely heading down the path to divorce as seems to happen in so many autism families. i think i'd rather be a hyper depressed asexual aspie on medication than be where she is right now. and what happens to her son when she is divorced and old?
but in the end she is going to be thankful for us on the higher end of the spectrum. because we're the only ones who can provide the insight and ideas which will help get through to her son. we've already seen a bunch of sharp comments in this thread.
we need to fight the condition not advocates like her.. she's on our team, she just doesn't quite understand it yet.
Exactly what I was saying, If she doesn't want to acknowledge us, then she will never get her questions answered. I was on a panel discussion a couple of months ago and I tpok questions from parents and teachers of both autistics and Aspergians. Some of the parents of autistics children thought that I could not relate to their questions, but before the evening was over, I explained why their children enjoyed stimming, why they were so fearfulness of certain experiences, and why they would not eat certain foods and how they could get them to eat better.
I did not even think I knew all of those things myself going into it, but I thought in terms of simply multiplying my Aspergers experience by about a thousand times and I think that that must be what autistic kids experience. So... anyway, that's why I'm now writing a book.

I was wondering why she is so very opposed to the whole concept of "autism spectrum". After seeing all the videos people have posted, I think she lives in fear of the day that autism actually does get redefined as "difference, not disability". I don't think the day will ever come when the world at large thinks her son is not disabled, merely different, and therefore needs no resources beyond what the family can provide. But she does seem pretty firmly in the grip of that fear and so sees herself in an all-out war with anyone who is less disabled than her son and especially with anyone who says they are autistic but not disabled by it. I think she is afraid the public perception of autism (as disseminated by Hollywood) will morph from "Rainman" who needs lots of assistance to Sheldon of the Big Bang Theory, who needs no assistance at all. And then her son will get lumped into that group and get no assistance ever again.
If she's ever lurked on WP, the threads that say "we're the next step in evolution" must make her seethe with intense fury. Next steps in evolution don't need such help like her son does.
I don't think her fear of a shift in perception accompanied by a shift away from assisstance will come to pass. There may be a shift in perception, but I don't think it will come at the expense of people who really need 24/7/365 help. Or maybe I'm wrong and that is exactly what will happen. She sure is fighting hard against that though.
And you did point out the sad irony that the people who may be able to shift things in her son's favor are the very people she's fighting against. I don't think it's the zero-sum game she imagines it to be. She doesn't realize that her son's most devoted allies may actually be the very people she currently hates most.

That kid needs help, the RIGHT help. I mean, there must be something he's trying to tell his parents if he keeps hitting himself in the ears, he might be trying to tell them he can't hear to well, or might be hearing too much. Seriously!

so uh... do you honestly think that these parents don't know that. Since you seem to have all the answers please define what is this "right" help that you refer to.

This is a big problem. In your work advocating for autistic kids at school, you have probably come across a significant amount of bafflement and incorrect attempts to help. It's easy enough to say "he's trying to communicate". But that doesn't take you very far at all unless you can 1)figure out correctly what he's trying to communicate (and being the parent gives no special insight into that) and 2)figure out the right thing to do with that information once you have it.

I completely understand your points. My question to the others here is what they think the parents are doing so wrong in this case. I see a Mother and Father who are completely devoted to a boy and not being able to figure out what this child is communicating. Can anyone on this board honestly say what the boy is feeling or saying? It seems like a few think they can. I want to know how and what...
