When I was in the fifth grade, I pretended that the hilly side of the playground was a land called "Zonia," (over which I was "President," of course). In 2004, I discovered that some individuals had started their own Internet-based micronations. I decided to form an online micronation of my own, called "Xonia." At various micro-national forums, I used the shorter "xon" as my my username. I had wanted to call my new micro-nation Zonia, but that name was apparently already being used.
Although "Xonia" never took off, I did become heavily involved in several other micronations, such as The Republic of Lavalon. Chris Gruber, the President of the Republic of Talossa ( http://www.talossa.net ), the most high-profile micro-nation in the United States, thanked me after I won an election for President of Lavalon. I was never a citizen of Talossa, but I have contributed an article to Talossa's national magazine, Qator Itrins, and was outspoken in favor of Talossa transforming from a Kingdom to a Republic, in light of Lavalon's success in that regard. One time, Lavalon was asked if it wanted to be a party to a treaty among several other nations and the Kingdom of Lovely. It was to be signed in London on live TV. I opposed the treaty on the philosophical ground that Lovely was not a "serious" micro-nation, and, due to my input into the matter, Lavalon did not sign the treaty. (The Kingdom of Lovely is the most high-profile 'micro-nation' in the United Kingdom; it has around 50,000 'citizen's' and its founder hosted a mockumentary about it on BBC TV. Their website is http://www.citizensrequired.com .)
It might surprise you, given the geeky nature that most people associate with it, but I would not recommend micro-nationalism to anyone with Asperger's syndrome due to the online bullying that is very present in the hobby, and which I have experienced first hand. I am now smarter about dealing with such things, but for someone who is vulnerable, like I once was, it could be worse than school or traumatizing. I just like the organizational aspect and the coding the websites and stuff. The politics of it is not what I enjoy the most, but you have to deal with at least some amount of it.
