Oh, yes...inanimate objects have always had distinct personalities, to me. :D Each one of my stuffed animals and die cast Cars has their own personality, their own unique name, likes and dislikes, etc.

LOL, once when my mom and I were getting ready to move house, I had to stay up in my room with my mom's dog cuz my mom was painting downstairs and didn't want the dog making a mess. This was during the summer, and the AC unit in my room was malfunctioning....he spat water and made ungodly rattling noises and kept complaining that someone my age should be doing something more productive than sitting in a room for hours on end, and that the dog was bothering his allergies....kinda like the AC from The Brave Little Toaster, but without the ranting and exploding. Man, I love that movie.

I couldn't come out of my room to go downstairs to eat (not that we still had food in the fridge at that point anyway) or get fresh air, cuz my mom had her painting stuff out everywhere, but thank God there was a bathroom right next to my room upstairs.

As a chld, I had similar beliefs. Even now, I find myself saying "sorry" to an object I run into or drop.

I am so gLad you posted this. When I was little, I was always bothered by this. My mom thought I was nuts because I would get upset about hurting the feelings of an inanimate object. Mainly my toys. That is one thing that made me wonder when I was little what was wrong with me. But you are definitely not alone. This has gotten better for me, but has been replaced with other quirks.

I have done this my entire life. I know it's not based in reality, but I still do it as an adult. When given a choice, I will always purchase an item that is damaged or plants that I think no one else will choose. I still find myself thinking about their feelings being hurt by not being chosen...reminiscent of the "island of misfit toys". And, once again, I do understand that this is not realistic, but I can't seem to get over this way of thinking. I also assign many emotions to animals, but that seems to be realistic to me.

Even though I know they don't, it doesn't forbid my brain to see them as just inanimate objects.
Most of my childhood was spent around things, not people, and I guess I grew a bond with them since they shared my loneliness, or sometimes cheered me up, even if it was just me doing that and giving them "life".

I remember a children's program where it had living hot water bottles and tooth brushes, and other basic household objects, it was one of my favourite programs since these objects were actually alive, similar to how they are in my own world, except for the fact in my world they don't move/ talk in a physical sense.

For this reason, I still have every soft toy I collected as a child, I still have "pet" rocks and sticks and just random pieces of wood/ stones/ shells etc...
At least in my world non-living things have personalities, they're alive, and people... well they're pretty empty and useless since they rarely contribute to my world.

I also have the mirrors off of our old family van, since it was old and had to be towed away, which used to make me cry quite a lot since I had a lot of memories of just sitting in the van, usually alone while my Mum would run errands, and we'd just talk and pass the time. At least to me it was alive.

Yes I do see inanimate objects as having personalities and emotions.......especially computers...........I know plenty of other NT people who think this way too.

I usually thank my car after a journey & give it a pat on the roof.

After someone gives me a lift or I see a friend off on a journey I have to stroke the car and ask it to look after them and give a safe journey. Although only time I didn't as the guy told me not to touch the body work, he loved that car, he wrote it off on the way back from the airport (he escaped unhurt thankfully).

Yes, though not as much as when I was little. When I was little, I collected rocks, and whenever I got a new rock, I would "introduce it" to the others, & then when I left the room I'd tell them to "get to know one another". I also have issues throwing things away, especially stuffed animals, because it's just like Toy Story with me. I just can't do that, I don't want to be that child who used to love them and then set them on the side of the road.

I never felt like objects had personalities, but I always felt like stuffed animals would suffocate if I placed them face down. Even to this day, I can't shake the idea that they will suffocate and I make sure they can "breathe". Not sure if this is related or not. I'm not even sure if I have any form of Autism...is this an Autism trait that I just described?

Aw, that's really nice! :) I'm sure your Car appreciates it.
