Well blackcat,

I don't know how younger girls judge one another, etc... today, etc.... but I still remember some acting VERY friendly around your age. perhaps it is just easier for girls.

WOW, was the cafeteria just too noisy for you, or was there some special event, etc??? Your holding your ears just seems so out of place. BTW That brought up ANOTHER related memory of mine. I went to an MLM meeting(NO, I didn't make any money there, and one guess why! 8-(). Anyway, the jerk yelled into the mike close to his mouth, and I saw the amp PEGGED! If that wasn't enough, it was an OLD auditorium MADE for sound. He could have whispered, and everyone would have heard him. I went running out feeling like SCREAMING! I was in PAIN! Few others did(if anyone else did). So I really DO understand your pain there.

ALSO, just as an aside.... A deaf person wouldn't be plugging her ears. 8-)

Steve

Between everyone talking at once and then talking louder to be heard over each other and, as a result, having to scream to be heard at opposite ends of the tables, all combined with REALLY REALLY HORRIBLE acoustics...those places bear down on ya.

Blackcat,

OK, SORRY!

As for how you are talking, the idea of AS answered questions I never even thought to ask! One is that I don't handle volume well. I used to talk pretty low, and now I sometimes talk too loud. Maybe you have the same problem.

Seeing how others here act, etc.... I really can't fathom what you are speaking about. I HAVE spoken "above" others. You have to know your audience, and not use too many "big" words. Maybe THAT is your problem.

SOME people, though it's mostly males, will listen to what they say get overly concerned, and stutter. If that is your problem, you have to struggle to overcome it.

ALSO, is your accent different from the others? Maybe the misunderstanding is because you have an odd accent, or they can't understand you because they are from a different area.

Do you usually speak in a steady manner? I mean some may say like na-ew instead of new. If you don't speak smoothly, you should try to do so.

HEY, have you thought about asking your friends? Maybe one of them could help you out. Maybe it will be like me with hindi. I asked an indian friend about 1 word, and he corrected me, and BANG hundreds of similar words are likewise corrected! Maybe you will have the same luck.

Steve

BTW if you don't want to ask your friends, you could try to post an MP3 of you saying things you feel are representative, and misunderstood, and maybe we can help you. If you feel embarassed, maybe you can PM me a link to it. I'd be happy to see if I could help. BTW I would certainly not say anything to embarass you, etc.... Based on what others have said here, I doubt they would either. If you DO PM me, I will just communicate with you via PM as well, so it will all be private.

its ok, just.. seeing my real name on here freakes me ot for some reason. steph would be fine Steve.i go back and forth between too quiet or too loud.i confuse my friends with big words often.ive always stuttered when stressed.my accent IS a LITTLE different but notmuch. its fading rapidly. my speech is quite smothe. also fast. but my problem is i STRETCH words too far. my friend has commented that i sound like the kid in mecury rising when i do this"its kind of creepy"...

I know. Neurotypical nonsense. Never gets any better. Never gets any worse. Whenever confronted with something weird like this, just smile, and say "oh, yeah, okie dokie!" I know it feels strange, but it seems to pacify these creatures. Do not allow their strange and arbitrary antics to upset you. Neurotypicals will do as neurotypicals will do.

He just talks really slow, and slurs the words.

He's meant to be autistic.

Bruce Willis is in the movie too coincidentally.

I find myself "dumbing it down" when I talk to 90% of people, otherwise I get accused of being "too intellectual" which gets annoying.

Crying is not a reason to feel silly. I conjecture that you feel silly because you have failed to find the reason for it. It is merely a glitch in your central nervous system, and I assure you that there is no rational premise. Avoid overstressing yourself in the future. Attempt to get more sleep, and take better heed of your physical nutrition. These have more than anything else to do with your fits.

To control the slurred speech, merely compile a few handy sentences and phrases that you are apt to use often, and mentally rehearse them. Immerse yourself in social situations frequently, in a rested state, and practice timing. The society in which you are situated is more pliant if you have skill in this area.
