It would be nice to have someone stare at me again. Maybe the next time it happens i'll look back and smile for a change.

Same here. If I'm in a line I'll sometimes shift just a little bit so that I have at least a partial peripheral sight of the person behind me. Or if someone's walking right behind me I'll go to the sides and pretend to adjust my shoelaces so they can get ahead of me. I seriously dislike people walking right behind me.

The staring does bother me, I can't see why people can't mind their own business. I know it's not looks of interest. If they are, then man, there sure are a lot more lesbians out there than the average % would seem to indicate. I also think laughing at someone after they catch you staring at them is most definitely not a sign of interest. At least not the positive kind of interest. More the kind of interest I'm used to which involves other people having lots of fun by making me miserable.

I would like to say I do draw a distinction between people staring and people who are zoned out but facing my direction. I've had both happen. The ones who's mind really is a million miles away are very easy to spot, and I don't mind that at all. It's when they follow you with their eyes and there's that look, that look of contempt, derision or judgment that bugs because it's such a double standard. If I did it to them I'd be called rude, threatening, and creepy.

I don't like it when teenage girls stare at me. They never look at me at all when they're on their own, but when they're with others they try to make it really obvious that they're looking at me. I don't know if they do this to other young females. but if I actually caught them staring at other teenagers and young adults too, I would be fine about it. But because I haven't, all these paranoied thoughts in my head make me think that it's personal.

Maybe they want to shag you? Or be friends?

I catch people staring all the time. It freaks me out because I don't know why they would stare. Sometimes I just stare back at them, though.

Replying to the OP:
When people stare at me, it always creeped me out. It happened a lot when I was younger because I was young, pretty and thin with Ally McBeal short skirts that showed off my legs and business savvy long jackets that hid my flat butt. I would always feel like their time would be better spent talking to me so I could tell them I'm not interested and then they could ignore me. But so many men just stare at you like you're there just for that purpose. Ick. Getting stared at still creeps me out but that's because I'm a thirty-something married mom so I see no reason why I should be on anyone's radar, no matter how I look or what I'm wearing.

((They probably feel safer gawking at boys in a pack and you only notice when you're the subject of their momentary adoration. You're probably just cute and that catches their interest. These girls would probably never be that bold individually.)) <-- Scrap that. I figured out you're female, Joe90.

One thing that holds true about what I said is that these girls wouldn't have the stones to be obvious about their staring when they're by themselves. They could be doing this to you for several reason, both positive and negative. I would suggest rolling your eyes and ignoring it as best you can. This is still typical tacky teen behavior.

I catch people staring at me all the time when I am out in public. Half of the time, it makes me feel uncomfortable. I usually try to ignore it. I'll stare right back at them if I am very irritated.

But I can tell different types of stares apart. Some are friendly stares - the ones where they smile to you or look like they're ready to smile to you. I like that type of stare - it makes me feel nice.
And there's the piss-taking stare from teenagers, where they stand there and stare at you in that most bitchy way. That is the most intimidating stare of all.
And there's the stare where people are thinking something like, ''god who's that stupid girl standing there - she looks weird!'' And that offends me because I look down at myself, wearing nice clothes, and I think, ''yeh, what's wrong with me?'' If I was wearing something odd or doing something odd to make them look, I wouldn't mind because there's a reason I could work on. But when they're staring at you for....looking normal, then it makes me wonder if I look ugly or something.

The other day I went and stood at a crowded bus stand in the bus station, and I saw these 2 young women look over at me in the corner of my eye, then when I looked round at them with my eyes, the other one was staring down at my brand new 60 pounds worth boots, and my fashionable skinny jeans (everything I was wearing was the latest fashion - nothing odd on me at all). I hope there was a complimental reason behind why she was looking at my legs.

And every time I get off or on the bus, people who are sitting down always look up at me and stare, but when I see other people get on or off I look at the back of the people's heads who are sitting down at the front and I never see them look up at the people coming off and on. Only just me.

Once I came home from work crying my eyes out because of this.

Just give them the finger or stick out your tongue or better yet extend your arm and point at them and laugh. I wonder what they would do if you started walking towards them while staring at them? At least you will make them uncomfortable.

Hard to say if anyone stares, as I'm usually look down or away from people. Besides, if I don't keep an eye on my shoes, who will? :)

People sometimes stare at me for no reason, it seems.
