The other view:

1) If someone is a little slower than you, and can't handle the big words, then you really should be more considerate. Show some humility and use simpler words for them. Many slower people are still very decent people, and afterall, they never chose to be the way they are. If they're being as*holes, by all means, shoot them down, otherwise, show them the same consideration you ask for with your AS.
2) A lot of people use needless "big" words to try to appear smart. Although they should be tolerated because they're fairly harmless and just compensating, it's still annoying to listen to. Sometimes people will mistakenly think you're doing the same.

I do agree with most of what people on this thread are saying. I just think it's important to consider things from all angles.

Yes, I quite agree. It would be like, when working on a help desk, to listen to the problem the person is calling about and saying "Yeah, you need to defragment your hard drive and then relocate your swap file to another drive. Then go through your registry and remove all the extraneous entries in the Run and RunOnce folders."

And then hanging up. Inconsiderate at the very least.

My beef is with the people who know what I'm talking about and still get cranky.

Bump

I'm sorry but all you guys (& gals if the case maybe) are coming off as extremely pompous and ignorant. It sounds like just because you have a bigger vocabulary or you are just using words you just found out the meaning of 2 seconds before hand then you are better than everyone else. I mean what If someone wants to be a musician or an athlete, do they need to know every word in the English dictionary and its meaning?

If it's part of your job then fair enough, but theres nothing better when you are hanging out with friends and family having a few cold beers and "dumbing" yourself down as people like to put it and basically relaxing. It's like if someone finds socializing easy then gives you a hard time just because you cant do this and that.

Big words don't bug people. Big words bug people with small vocabularies and/or small minds.
Pay them no mind, as they have none.

Ooooo.... I love that statement and am going to gank it. muhahahaha

Sorry...back to your regularly scheduled program.

I recently sent an email to a young lady and after sending it had a flash of fear. I was thinking, she may not understand what the hell I asked as I believe except for the usual words (the, and, but, etc) none were under 4 syllables in length and doubtful that any of them would ever turn up in "normal" conversation. I was pleasently surprised that she did understand it and wasn't put off. Of course the conversation then denigrated into a discussion on the finer points of badger poking... is it better to use a stick or a spoon? :)

You seem to be completely missing the point. Or maybe I am mising your point. Will you please clarify?

I tend to use "big words" and I definitely do not feel that I am better than everyone else. I feel the same, at best. Although, I am only speaking for myself, as I do not know how other people may feel relative to everyone else. I speak exactly as I type or write, all the time, whether I am relaxing or working.

It's just easier for me to speak the way I normally do, rather than simplifying my vocabulary just so I don't offend those who don't know the meaning of (what I find to be) age-appropriate words.

I think big words bug them because they don't know what they mean. If they don't know what they mean, then they don't understand what you are saying, it's like hearing a foreign language.

Yeah guess I must have and maybe this isn't the best place to be discussing this but it kind of bugs me in a way.

And Its not like most of the big words being used I don't know the meaning of, its just when someone keeps on using and using these big words, I just feel that they could have just as easily (and more quickly) made it simpler and not come off as acting like such an upper class snob.

Sorry if I'm wrong but its just the way I feel.

Wow guess I'm not autistic either. I'm not smart nor do I have any of these other symptoms Ive seen here. What the hell is wrong with me? :?

Hmm now I completely understand what you mean.
I guess if I were in your situation, I would become quite annoyed too.
I don't think there's anything wrong with you.

If you don't know what they mean, just ask them what do those words mean. Also I love learning new words.

Bugging people, big words topic

If I use a big word in NT company I always define it. This might bug them even more!

This topic is old. It has been resurrected (oops! big word!).

I took a journalism class years ago and the instructor always told us to KISS (keep it simple short) in terms of article length and vocabulary. This is easier to do in writing. 8)

Go to a doctor who does tests on people to know what they have.

Exactly what I mean and resurrected isn't a big word.

And yeah well I guess I will try to go see a doctor.

I found you have to be careful were you use big words, some people just don't like anything above their monosyllabic grunts. See I used monosyllabic not really a big word for most of us, but to most mouth breathers it may be quite insulting if they could understand what it meant. They may say, hey thats fancy talk Fag! :)

I wouldn't say I find big words a turn-off, though I understand people are annoyed when you use words they don't understand. I have a rendency to asume that people always knows a word when I know it.

I think that big words can scare people because its like we're speaking a different language, and it worries people that they don't speak the same language. That's the hassle with having AS in general: people don't understand, so they're afraid. But in being a victim, we can be sure not to share the same closed-mindedness.
