I've given plenty of advice to younger members on here already and had it totally ignored.
You can't tell young people anything - they have to learn by their own mistakes.

i actually did this once. (pats self on back).

i was on the train and two ladies behind me said 'Aspergers" and i swung around and asked if i could join in their conversation.
it worked!

one had a piano student who has Asperger's, and the other a son who is Autistic.

Since it's an interest and interesting to me (why wouldn't it be) and since i knew they had both at least some experience with aspies/auties, I felt somewhat not too nervous. Plus I knew that there was only about 40 minutes left on the trip. Seemed a safe time frame,

Unfortunately, I don't think I managed to get everything (anything?) through to one of them (the teacher) with regards to the idea that we actually DO think and experience the world in a different manner than NTs; she kept trying to reassure me that 'everyone is slightly different but we're all normal' like I felt being different set me below others. Apart yes. Below no. Above no. Apart yes.

And the other one kept trying to convince me to listen to 'the spirit of what people are trying to say' rather than the literal words people use. Yeah. If it was that easy wouldn't I be able to do it? Meanwhile I was trying to advise her (and the other one)to speak in direct and precise language when speaking to her son (or her student) or anyone else with ASD if they are having trouble communicating... And to take all communication from her son at word face value, and likely as the way he actually sees things, as oppossed to exaggerations or metaphors.

Again - they want us to do all the changing, and they think it would be so easy if we 'were just willing to do that'.
Missed my point entirely. Like nearly every other important point I try to make. Made me sad.

Maybe I even failed here.

Well you are just some random person to them who wants to talk in their private conversation. It is very creepy.

This, actually. I get freaked if anyone joins my conversation/sits on my table uninvited...

As for subjects, all topics can be discussed, why not? Maybe some relative got diagnosed and they were curious... I see nothing wrong.

I think that they probably just wanted to discuss their own perceptions and experiences as relating to AS, not actually learn about it as they probably don't care that much. I'm sure the conversation switched to their own perceptions of something else a few minutes later anyway. A lot of the NT's that I've known seem to be capable of having a conversation about anything under the sun, whereas I feel very limited to things I have knowledge of, or at least take an interest in so that I can ask questions.

I had a very NT room mate for a couple of years. Not sure why she liked me so much, but she did...so I had the opportunity to observe a lot of her behavior. Sometimes when I'm confused about NT behavior, I ask myself "what would my old room mate do in this situation".... if she were to turn around and talk to these people, I think she would have said "Excuse me, I don't mean to be rude, but I couldn't help but overhear what you were talking about...", and than immediately follow with a specific point that she wanted to make and offer her contact information in case they wanted to know more in the future. If she thought she was saying something weird, but insisted on saying it anyway, she would say "I know it probably sounds kind of weird" or something like that. At first I thought that the contact info thing was over the top, but over time I came to observe that people did actually contact her about the most random things, and that led to friendships.

And we should just let ignorance continue existing, even though we know it's wrong? Who cares if the NTs aren't interested in learning the real facts about neuropsych disorders? We still need to make every effort possible to spread awareness, regardless of whether or not they want to listen. InThisTogether is completely right about how people either need to talk about potentially offensive subjects truly in private or to censor their audible conversations. This is another reason I do not feel that butting into stereotype-filled conversations is rude. It's not like I'm actually eavesdropping. I can't help BUT hear the conversation due to their volume and proximity. If they really wanted their conversation to be private, they should make the attempt to at least lower their voices or move farther away from nearby people.

I'm not sure they thought you were creepy. To me it sounds like they got a bit embarrassed and therefore walked away.

People like to talk about social issues and things ha are popular in the media among themselves while basically rejecting any factual information you give them.

l agree, it's annoying. l see a lot of straight people talk about gay marriage the same way. No offense to anyone here, l don't mean WP anyway.

l'm sure some who harp on about it incessantly do support it but l think the larger motivation is that they feel important by talking about it and exchanging that information with their peers.

l don't even tell these types that l am gay mot of the time, all l would get is fake support that is motivated by their political stance which they often haven't examined that deeply. How much can they really care about the lives of random strangers when l don't care about theirs?

Another thing l have notice that same thing with is the discussion of trans people.

One person in particular was talking about them non-stop not long ago. She was a hetero female who had never had any kind of gender identity issues in her life and one day she said something bout how she had asked the guy she was dating if he would accept her if she was trans and she was gushing because he said yes.

WAT.

l actually said something to her about it. Basically, that all her talk about trans people seemed misguided and disingenuous and that l have a trans sibling myself and wish that people who really have nothing to do with the issue at all would just stop offering phony support.

Maybe hostile but at one point this girl also said she would never date a trans person. She just went on some rant about how much she supports and them and how LIBERAL she is, etc, etc, and ended with that.

So, seriously, stfu and find a new cause to exploit for your own weird, attention whorey reasons. lol.

So, I was walking to a friends dorm room last night, and these girls behind me were talking (in a very neurotypical fashion, I might add) about Asperger's. They were saying things such as: "so and so that I know has it...yeah, they're really obsessed with stuff, it's cute....yeah, well I know someone that has it and... etc etc."

Rather than freaking them out, a good way to handle a situation like this would be to say, "Excuse me, I couldn't help but overhear you talking about Aspergers. I happen to have Aspergers and would be glad to discuss it or answer any questions you might have." Granted, that would take being social, but trying to open a dialog and foster some understanding would be much better than freaking people out and giving them the impression that Aspies are just creepy people.

Maybe they did that because it's not socially acceptable to listen into peoples conversations?
