Oh, the number of times I've heard that one! Yes, okay, I'll stop taking the meds that have been prescribed to me by a doctor and reviewed every six weeks at a follow-up appointment. I'll stop collecting my prescription from the brilliant local pharmacist who goes through my list of meds every time I'm prescribed something new and checks they are safe to take together. I'll stop taking pills that have been made by qualified chemists and are traceable back to the source.

No, instead I'll pick up a pot of goodness-knows-what made in someone's kitchen-sink-chemistry-lab and imported from the Far East. (Seriously - EU regulation is only just catching up with herbal remedies, until recently it really could be any part of the plant in any quantity in one of those pills.) St John's Wart is known to have interactions with many other drugs, but that's okay, I'll just start it without seeing a doctor or pharmacist, what's the worst that can happen?

That's actually good advice. That's life, and over time you get used to it. As an artist, the frustrations I have with it inspire artwork and I find moderate success sometimes. You have to accept it first, however.

How is telling someone to get over something that hurts good advice? :x I assume you have no idea what it's like to live with Hyperacusis and how painful it can be?

"Don't worry about it, everyone has the same problems" - Yeah OK then why aren't you medicated?.

Noticing a common one here is "be yourself"...I find it has worked for me. It has earned me a few very loyal friends, and isn't that all you truly need?

I've heard that one too. Most people I've met don't have sensory issues.

It's not so much the advice, it's when people think you should always do the opposite to what you choose to do. For example:-

''If you feel apprehensive about change and socialising and work, you can go on to so-and-so website to chat to other people online with similar problems and get suggestions and advice. It is good to talk to other people who understand''

So you do just that, then you get:-

''Get out there, do new things, meet new people, no good sitting whining on the internet about it''

:wall: :wall:

That's right up there with "you just need to PAY ATTENTION!", or "you need to learn how to pay attention." I mean, did I miss that class in high school? Is there a refresher course at the local community college?

The worst given to me-
- Its ok to be different
- Be yourself
- Take pride in your flaws
- You are a good person the way you are
- Its ok people if dont like you
- People will respect you for being this way
- Only care about yourself
- Your life will be successful if you take my advice

And how about these good ol' contradictory pairs:

1. a) "Just be more spontaneous!!"
b) "You need to THINK more before you do/say something."

2. a) "Don't be ashamed to be different."
b) "You need to try harder to conform to the group mentality."

3. a) "Stop over-analyzing the situation and just let it come to you naturally."
b) "Try harder."

4. a) "If you don't understand their meaning, then just ASK!"
b) "You need to figure out how to read between the lines, so you don't make people uncomfortable. It just takes a little time and patience but you can figure it out."

...then top it all off with:

"RELAX!! !"

Generally, people who know how to be helpful don't need to rely on cliched advice, since they can explain what they mean without being condescending at all.

"Pay attention" Like I don't
"get over the noise" like I can
"get over it" I would love to.
