a. Boundless enthusiasm: His skills as a player don't quite match his passion for the game.
b. The object of such enthusiasm: Soccer is her passion.
4. An abandoned display of emotion, especially of anger: He's been known to fly into a passion without warning.
Agreed, passion is a better description because obsession implies unwanted and related to anxiety but I think people are referring to the restrictive, repetitive interests that are a symptom of Asperger's. There can be an obsessive quality to these interests because people "have to" preform certain routines related to them and/or they take over the person's life and exclude most other activities or they're an interest in something really unusual and narrow. Special interest is actually a more accurate term given the dictionary definition of special.
definition
1: distinguished by some unusual quality; especially : being in some way superior <our special blend>
2: held in particular esteem <a special friend>
3a : readily distinguishable from others of the same category : unique <they set it apart as a special day of thanksgiving>
b : of, relating to, or constituting a species : specific
4: being other than the usual : additional, extra
5: designed for a particular purpose or occasion
but still not a great word because it often has a connotation of being superior and it doesn't capture all the aspects of these interests...........we need a new term!
