I dunno that all smiles in the context of the experiment are fake. Maybe some people just get told to smile, and the other people they tell a joke to or some other prompt that causes a genuine emotion.

Anyway, I kind of know intellectually that the way most people tell is you look at the smiling person's eyes... But I was basically just guessing randomly on all but one or two. 11/20 (which is about what you'd expect for random guesses minus one or two certainties).

Of course, I also don't really look at people as directly and intently right in the face as I got to with these people... So... Yeah. Even if I was better, I'm not sure how much "better" I'd do in real life.

16/20

I focused more on the eyes than the mouths since that tends to be the real measure of a person's smile. Probably why I have so much trouble determining other people's emotions IRL.

You got 16 out of 20 correct.

I based my decisions on the eyes and the movement of the skin to either side of the eyes. 8)

14/20

I look for how quickly the eyes return to normal, in a real smile the eyes gradually return.

I note this about people at work, the ones who are genuinely pleased to see me and the ones that are being polite, hence, I incorporate this into my own fake polite smiles, I always leave my eyes crunched up a bit longer so people think Iam really that glad to see them.

I got 18 correct! I am good at this. (Genuine smile here!)

I use this method: The more parts of the person move, and the more elaborate the movement, the more chance that the smile is genuine. Some people move their entire face, or even their head and shoulders when they smile - that has to be a real smile.

If only the mouth moves, there is a good chance the smile is fake. Also, if the 'smile' disappears very quickly, it is likely to have been fake.

I got 16 out of 20. Not bad. The muscles around the eyes were the best indicator for me (I don't make much eye contact in actual interactions). Also, in a few of them, the person moved their heads too, as if they were laughing.

16/20...surprised myself. 8O

Mistook two genuines for fakes, and two fakes for genuines.

I got 15/20. I looked more at their eyes, but had to guess on some. Although all the ones I missed were men... missed 3 genuine and 2 fake.

I got 12/20.... I'm not sure if I did better than I thought I would or not. I thought that 12/20 was a pretty good score, though. XD

Yeah, the most helpful part for distinguishing genuine from forced(I like that better than 'real' or 'fake') was the eyes. However, I don't know if I'd be able to distinguish a real smile from a forced one in real life because I don't look at people's eyes really. I generally look at their mouths. I suppose their expression before and after and the context of when they are smiling and why they are 'smiling' can be taken into account when deciding whether their smile is genuine or not... You know, in social situations, not in this test.

Anyway, I marked 5 fake ones as real, and 3 real ones as fake. Some of these people looked a bit interesting. One I couldn't tell whether they were a man or a woman.

Interesting test, though.

12/20 - I focused more on the mouth than the eyes - I should have read the whole thread before trying to pick up on this - but on the other hand, this reflects what I do in real life because I tend to look at people's mouths more than their eyes.

At the end of the test it said that most people are generally really bad at spotting fake smiles. Genuine smiles generally happen automatically, where fake smiles are a conscious effort.

Being able to tell a real smile from a fake one is all in the eyes. Eyes say a lot.

The eyes, we tend not to look at them(LOL).

I got 16/20.

Usually, toothy smiles are genuine. The amount of resistance at the initial start up of the smile is also a good indicator.
